Murphy’s law states that anything with a chance of going wrong can and will. Nothing went right for the New York Yankees in the Fall Classic. Things like hitting with runners on and fielding were non-existent. Games one and five were particularly frustrating because both were winnable games. With how they played in the series, New York was lucky not to be swept. The New York Yankees deserved to lose this World Series.

When the Yankees matched up with the Los Angeles Dodgers, fans were very optimistic that the World Series trophy would finally come home to the Bronx. However, it wasn’t meant to be. Despite only being outscored by the Dodgers 25-24, New York would lose the series 4-1. The lack of hitting with runners on and poor fielding were the culprits to their World Series loss. This all came to ahead in their must-win game five where the Yankees struggled to do both those things. Overall, the Yankees lack of success can be traced by them failing to do the fundamental things right.

Not Gonna Win If By Not Hitting With Runners On

Despite having big bats like Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, and Giancarlo Stanton in the lineup, New York struggled badly to hit with runners in scoring position. As a team, the Yankees went just 9-47 with runners on base in the World Series. They also stranded a total of 38 runners on base as well. This was a problem that carried over from their postseason series against the Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Guardians as well. The Yankees had many opportunities to have big innings and potentially take all the momentum. However, they failed to capitalize on a lot of those situations. The Yankees’ inability to hit with runners in scoring position is a big reason why they failed to bring home a championship.

Poor Fielding All Series

One thing that no team could afford to do in the postseason against the Dodgers is to give them extra outs. Their lineup was too potent offensive to give them additional chances to score runs. However, the Yankees did this multiple times against them in the World Series. As a team, the Yankees committed five errors in the series. New York was badly hurt by their fielding issues in game five where they committed three errors in the fifth inning. This ultimately caused them to blow a 5-0 lead, and it ultimately cost them the game as well as the series.

While it may not show up in the box score, there were a few instances where Yankee fielders misplayed balls, and it allowed the Dodgers to get an extra base or score a run. If a team can’t have a clean fielding game and gives away extra outs, it makes it much more difficult to win.

The Team Has Nobody To Blame But Themselves

With the team having trouble hitting with runners in scoring position and abysmal fielding, the Yankees deserved to lose the World Series. They are lucky that the Dodgers didn’t outright sweep them. Game five might go down as the most embarrassing World Series game the Yankees have ever played. The most aggravating part is that had the Yankees made the fundamental plays, the team would’ve had some momentum to potentially turn the series around. However, the plays weren’t made, and New York will head into the offseason with nobody but themselves to blame for their many mistakes.
