Well, Dan Clark….you have officially made the list.
In late December of 2018, Dan Clark, Baseball Writer for the Internet Baseball Writers of America, tweeted out saying that Manny Machado was on his way to the Bronx to play for the New York Yankees. In February of 2019, as Spring Training gets underway, Manny Machado is heading to the San Diego Padres.
You stupid idiot!
First reported by ESPN this morning, Manny Machado has agreed to a record setting 10 year/$300 million dollar contract with the San Diego Padres, pending a physical. After months of anticipation, Machado finally gets exactly what he asked for, making history in the process as his deal becomes the largest in American Sports history.
The former No. 3 overall pick seemed to have ruined his chances for a larger contract when constantly loafing up the first-base line, then fanned the flames when he told Fox Sports during the postseason that hustling is “not my cup of tea.”
In the deal, Machado has an opt-out clause after the fifth year, meaning that after the fifth year of the contract, he can walk. Given the padres recent history, Machado may want to consider leaving Southern California if San Diego isn’t a winning club by 2023.
This becomes the Padres second big signing in 2 years, as Machado joins Eric Hosmer as the Padres second $100+ million dollar signing in a 14 month span. This move clearly shows the Padres will to succeed now, as General Manager, AJ Preller, has a bright future ahead for Major League Baseball’s least successful organization over the past decade.
With the likes of Fernando Tatis Jr coming into the fold, the Padres May have a shot to contend sooner rather than later with Machado in the fold.
“[He is] a generational talent,” Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer said Monday about the possibility of the team landing Machado or Bryce Harper. “… I think it just shows where this organization is at. Where we’re at, at the process right now. We’re trying to win baseball games. … It’s exciting, it’s motivating.”
White Sox executive vice president, Kenny Williams, wasn’t exactly expected the news today either, saying, “I’m wearing my shades so you can’t see the shock in my eyes,” Williams told reporters at White Sox spring training in Glendale, Arizona. “… We thought we were the high offer on the table.”
Given how Chicago signed all of Machado’s Facebook friends, not to mention his brother in law, Yonder Alonzo and good friend, Jon Jay, it looked as if the south side of Chicago was gonna be in for an exciting 2019 season. That’s too bad.
With Manny staying in Southern California, it’s going to be a fun road ahead watching the San Diego Padres, who have yet to win a World Series (1 appearance in 1998 against the New York Yankees) put together a winning club and one day capture it all.
Good for Manny. He got exactly what he wanted since November, 10 years and $300 million dollars. Not to mention the fact, that he gets to live in the nicest part of the entire country. The caption of this article speaks for itself, Manny is in fact, money.
