Fresh off their 2018 World Series win, the Red Sox did not need to do much for the coming season. Because all of their core guys were coming back for 2019, the Red Sox could have stayed put and focused on the upcoming season. However, it appears this was not an option for the Sox.
Chris Sale
A key piece from the 2018 run, Chris Sale was set to become a free agent after this season. Considering the unpredictable nature of free agency, it made sense to get a deal done now. Chris Sale has lead the AL in strikeouts twice, has been an All-Star 7 times, and should be a Cy Young winner. Signing Sale to a five year, $145 million contract was a great move for both sides. The Red Sox locked up their starting pitcher, and Sale got a contract on par with the top free agents this year. While it is not as long or as lucrative as the Harper or Machado deal, both sides can walk away feeling good about it. But what about the other positions?
The Outfield
The Red Sox outfield is one of the best in baseball. Mookie Betts is coming off his MVP win. Jackie Bradley Jr. is one of the best defensive center fielders in baseball. Mix in the young stud Andrew Benintendi, and even J.D. Martinez if necessary, and this outfield is loaded. However, there is a problem. After this season, Jackie and Mookie are eligible for arbitration, and will be free agents in 2021. In addition to this, Mookie has already said he will not be negotiating a deal this season. These are both very important players for the Red Sox’s success. Jackie is the easier player to bring back, as he would not get as much on the open market. However, while Jackie won’t get as much, he still could get a moderate sized deal based on his defense. While they both seem happy now, no one knows how they will feel in two years time. With Benintendi and J.D. locked up until 2023, it should be top priority for the Red Sox to bring back their guys.
Why I’m Not Freaking out… yet
As much as I want the Red Sox to hold onto Mookie and Jackie, I know it’s not a definite. One thing that is working in the team’s favor is ownership has no qualms with spending money. While consistently over the luxury tax, the Red Sox don’t seem to care. They will gladly pay the money if it means to win. While a Trout sized deal might be a little ridiculous to expect, given that the Red Sox have other players to pay, it is not out of the question.
All I know is, we have more of this to look forward to.
