Let’s be honest about the WWE; they are missing star power currently. Seth Rollins and Kofi Kingston are Universal and WWE champions respectively, but it seems as though something is missing. What is that “thing” that is missing? Their continuous shuffling of storylines. Rollins has jumped from the likes of Brock Lesnar to AJ Styles, to…Baron Corbin? Now, I am not that guy who cannot stand having Corbin on television, but he should not be involved in such a high profiled match for Monday Night Raw’s top title. Same for Kingston; jumping from Daniel Bryan to Kevin Owens, to a returning Dolph Ziggler from a hiatus is putting Kofi in a bad spot. Both have a common denominator with Bryan and Styles both sustaining injuries, but the rosters are too stacked to have placeholders as number one contenders.
Star power is lacking, but within the grounds of true WWE loyalists, there are NXT guys that are considered stars. You have the likes of Johnny Gargano, Velveteen Dream, and Matt Riddle, whom are probably ready for a call-up at this moment in time. For the longest time, I have said the WWE is missing a heel stable. Whatever Shane McMahon has going on is not working due to him being in the spotlight, and not Drew McIntyre. The main roster needs something new and fresh, and while people point to the Firefly Funhouse being that, I think a call up needs to happen. Since the Wild Card rule is open to NXT, it is time for the Undisputed Era to make their main roster debut.
Remember the time when the Wade Barrett-led Nexus debuted in 2010 and wrecked havoc at the expense of John Cena, CM Punk, and almost everyone around the ringside area? Let Adam Cole lead the charge, and have Kyle O’Reilly, Bobby Fish, and Roderick Strong crash the ring on BOTH top champions, and take them out. This should lead to a barrage of attacks on main roster talent to solidify their claim to be at the top of the main roster. This would lead to a championship match for Cole at Summerslam between either Kingston or Rollins; as he should lose the title to a returning Tomasso Ciampa at the Takeover before it. Him winning the title would be a longshot for Cole realistically speaking, but the match should happen.
If not a top title match, the WWE should call a certain legend to put Cole over at Summerslam. That legend is John Cena. Whether people want to admit it or not, WWE is missing Cena’s drawing power a lot. Despite that Cena has been hinting at retirement for a full transition to Hollywood, they can try to get him back for a big storyline for the summer, since WWE absolutely needs it. While Cena may be an aging part-timer, there is no doubt Cena can still put on a good match with many guys on the roster. It is unlikely due to Cena’s schedule, but it does not hurt to try.
The WWE is not on life support at all, however, there has to be a sense of urgency. AEW set the tone with ‘Double or Nothing’, and with the emergence of a new wrestling company, WWE needs to pull some tricks out of their hat. Fans are a bit fed up at this point, and the company needs that ultimate spark. The fans would love for Vince McMahon to step down from his position in favor of Triple H, but that is simply not going to happen. Vince’s sense of urgency must rise to make this the competition that the real wrestling fans want.
