What an amazing second week and month of college basketball. I have seen some highs and lows and something I haven’t seen before. Let’s recap shall we? Let’s take a look at the college basketball recap.
DOES ANYONE WANNA BE NUMBER ONE?
First Michigan State loses to Virginia Tech in the 1st round of the Maui Invitational, then Duke loses at HOME to Stephen F Austin? Are you serious? The record for most teams at number one is seven which happened in 1983.
We are already halfway there, so good luck to Louisville, you will need it.
THE BIG TEN ACC CHALLENGE
Speaking of Louisville, one of my favorite early season games is an inter-conference battle like these. Quite frankly some of these games haven’t been close and they were lousy.
Coach Chris Mack’s Cardinals fresh off its new number one ranking convincingly throttled #4 Michigan 58-43.
#10 Duke bounced back from its stunning loss to SFA by beating #11 Michigan State 87-75. Hopefully, #3 Maryland vs Notre Dame, and #6 Ohio St vs #7 North Carolina will be a decent matchup because I’m not sure I wanna watch anymore in this challenge.
WHAT HAPPENED AT GEORGETOWN?
Patrick Ewing had his team lined up to make a run at an NCAA bid and challenge for the Big East title, however, that seems unlikely now.
Point Guard James Akinjo is out and entering the transfer portal. Players Josh LeBlanc and Galen Alexander just received restraining orders in November.
This was from accusations of harassment and burglary. To top that off freshman Myron Gardner was accused of “sexual harassment and assault,” said one of the findings.
James Akinjo was not a part of these findings. He was a major player for the Hoyas. He was their number two scorer and was the Big East freshman of the year last year. Good luck to coach Ewing putting together a team now.
A NEW DIVISION 1 RECORD
Sacred Heart guard Cameron Parker set the single-season assist record in a game with 24 against Division 3 Pine Manor , because it wasn’t a Division 1 opponent I don’t care and found it extraordinary. Ironically he didn’t score a point himself, how about that?
MICHIGAN STATE RETIRES DRAYMOND GREEN’S JERSEY
Draymond Green had his jersey retired by the Spartans in what I think was a classy move because he is still a winner in my book.
Green played in two Final Fours at Michigan State. He continues to be a member of the Spartan nation and he made a donation that helped fund a strength and conditioning center in the team’s arena.
MARKUS HOWARD IS AMAZING
So Folks if you haven’t seen Marquette guard Markus Howard play you are truly missing something special.
He scored 51 points against USC and 40 points against Davidson in the Orlando Invitational.
Howard is also only the third major conference player to record a 50 point game in three consecutive seasons, and he joins Wayman Tisdale from 1982-85, and Pete Maravich from 1967-70 to accomplish that feat.
Only four players in major conference history have scored 40 points in consecutive days, and now Markus joins another exclusive list.
Mr. Maravich again and Bob Petit from LSU and Mississippi’s Johnny Neumann are the others that Howard has now entered the record books with. Not too shabby, huh?
