MLB announced that they will be making some rule changes for the 2020 season, which could have some impact on the game. Here are the MLB new rule changes for the 2020 season.
Pitcher Restrictions
Pitchers will now have to face a minimum of three batters or they have to complete the half-inning. There will be allowances for injuries and bringing in a replacement pitcher. This new rule potentially takes some strategy away from teams in the later innings. Managers like to use matchups with their pitching especially in the National League.
Roster Rules
Each team’s active roster looks to expand to 26 in 2020 and can only carry a maximum of 13 pitchers at a time. Some teams like to carry more pitchers at a time, another strategy that will have to change. When Sept. 1st comes team’s will be required to carry 28 players with 14 pitchers.
Injured list and option periods
Clubs will not be allowed to reinstate a pitcher or two-way player unless it is past the 15 day period. A good rule because it could help to make sure that players are not trying to come back before they are ready. Teams will have to wait 15 days when optioning a player.
Other rules
Managers had 30 seconds to challenge a play on the field with the old rules but now that time has been reduced to 20 seconds. An interesting one is that players who qualify as two-way players may appear in games as a pitcher without counting against roster restriction. For doubleheaders, the original 26th mangoes to 27.
These rules could change some aspects of the game, some for the better. Others could take away aspects that fans and players like about the game. It will be interesting to see how players and teams adjust to the new rules. Do you like the new rules changes for the 2020 season?
