It would seem that current Baltimore Ravens safety Earl Thomas has had a bit of a rough last few years in his life, both on and off the field. Even if his on-field production is still at an All-Pro level, there are a couple incidents that derail any on the gridiron accomplishments. Which begs me to ask this: WTF, Earl?
The Injury/The Finger
During the 2018 offseason, Earl Thomas held out from the Seattle Seahawks, in hopes of a new and more lucrative deal. That never happened. He was worried about a major injury occuring with no new deal, which is exactly what happened.
Fast forward to Sept. 30, 2018. A game against their division rival Arizona Cardinals. He was injured on the play in which Arizona tied the game. Seattle went on to win the game on a field goal by then kicker Sebastian Janikowski.
Back to the injury. With his broken left leg in an air cast and on the player’s cart, many cameras caught the cart ride. As you can see in the picture above, this was the result. A big f*** you towards the Seattle sideline. Not directed at any of the players, but at the Seahawks’ brass and higher ups. This was his response to them not giving him a new deal and now suffering the injury.
And Now, Most Recently….
In a story posted on Wednesday evening, TMZ reported that Earl Thomas was in an altercation with his wife Nina back on April 13th. They reportedly got into an argument. Afterwards, Earl left along with his brother Seth who came to pick him up. From there they checked into a nearby airbnb.
Nina used his snapchat account to track him to said location and went to confront him. She also took Earl’s 9mm Berreta pistol to, as she put it, “scare him”. Upon arriving at the airbnb, she discovered both Earl and Seth in bed, naked, with other women.
At that point she took the gun and pointed it at Earl’s head. She also took the magazine out, without the knowledge of a round already being in the chamber.
Writer’s Take
I am a huge Seattle Seahawks fan. Naturally I was ecstatic to have Earl in the famed Legion of Boom secondary that dominated the NFL during the 2010 decade. The holdout and the middle finger incident was the final straw. At that moment, I was glad that Seattle wouldn’t be re-signing him.
He went on to sign a free agent contract for the 2019 season with Baltimore. He still played at a Pro Bowl level, earning a nod with 49 tackles and two picks for a tough Baltimore D before bowing out of the playoffs at the hands of the Tennessee Titans.
And now during the coronavirus pandemic, he decides to blatantly cheat on his wife. Worse off, she saw it first hand and confronted him, weapon in hand.
In the words of ESPN football analyst Cris Carter, C’Mon Man!! You have it made. A great paying job with a franchise who will contend for many seasons. A hot ass wife (though mugshots are not at all appealing) and kids. Now you decide to go behind your wife’s back. I guess that proves that Earl has used his middle finger in controversy in more ways than one.
