There were Lessons to be learned from the 2020 MLB raft night one that featured five rounds. Here are some lessons, negative and positive from the draft for MLB to learn from.
The Detroit Tigers had the first pick in the draft followed by the Orioles and Marlins to round out the top three picks. It was still exciting to see some of the future young players in the draft that featured plenty of pitching and outfielders. Since there are only five rounds this year because of circumstances it feels a little different.
Lessons Learned
The MLB draft had some lessons to be learned about the state of baseball right now. This year the Detroit Tigers, who had the first pick in the draft, chose top prospect third basemen, Spencer Torkelson. He is a good hitter and possesses good fielding skills that the Tigers need. They did the right thing and picked the best player.
The top three draft picks were as they should be with the Orioles taking right fielder Heston Kjerstad and the Marlins choosing top pitching prospect Max Meyers. Kjerstad is scouted to be a power hitter with good defense. Meyers was one of the top pitchers in the draft because he has a big arm. It showed that some teams are still taking the draft seriously. Even though there is uncertainty about 2020 season. Teams are focused on the future and building their farm systems.
Pitchers and infielders were popular choices in this draft, as seen with the Brewers and Royals choices. The Brewers got a steal with Garrett Mitchell who went lower than expected, even though he was the best outfielder in the top ten. Asa Lacy was a good pick for the Royals as he will be a good pitcher for them in the future. The draft has been interesting because of the remote factors and fewer rounds.

Some team’s picks were a little disappointing because they did not meet their needs, failing to use the draft to their advantage. The Rockies made a good choice with Zac Veen, who has the potential to be a good outfielder in MLB. A problem with that is like many teams the Rockies did not meet their current need for pitching. There were many teams who drafted players that may not serve their needs. It is the issue with salaries having an effect on the draft?
Recently there were rumors that teams may choose players that may not sign for whatever reason. MLB and the owners are having some issues regarding money. Therefore it’s kind of sad for those young players who were looking forward to making their dreams come true. This could be the future of the MLB draft and it is not looking good for young players.
