MLB has decided to have 2020 season with Spring Training 2.0 starting this week. Here are some changes to the roster and other important information to help preview the new season.
The 2020 season will be 60 games and a lot of new changes have been made to accommodate the circumstances. Player pools, taxi -squads and more will be included in the changes for how teams can put rosters together. It could benefit some teams that they will be able to do more with the roster. Furthermore, there will be teams that will struggle with this.
When the new season opens teams will have submitted their rosters up to thirty players with a minimum of twenty -five. It would be crazy to think that teams would not use all thirty roster spots just think of the extra players or pitchers they could use. Especially because there are no limitations on the number of pitchers allowed on an active roster this year. The sixty man player poll is part of the creation of the roster here is how.
Roster Rules
Player Pool
By Sunday at 4 PM ET teams were required to submit an up to sixty- man player pool. Each team can have up to 60 players who will be on their roster for the 2020 season. All players on a forty -player roster that team intends to play during the season will be part of the player pool. The rest will be made up of the non- forty -man roster players roster.
No team can exceed the limit of 60 players in a player pool at any time during spring training or regular season. Thirty players will make up the initial Opening Day roster for each team. Additionally, the other thirty players will be sent to an alternative site.
Transactions
Teams will be able to make all the standard transactions throughout the season. In order to add another player to the player pool, the team will have to remove one player. With regards, to players on the 40 man roster they can be removed by trade, waiver, or claims like in a normal season.
Indeed, teams can make trades as the deadline is moved from July 31st to August 31st. Teams will be limited on which players can be dealt, only players in the player pool will be eligible for trade. Any player who is acquired needs to be put in the player pool.
Other Changes
Taxi-Squad
Each team will be permitted a three-player taxi squad for every road trip they will come from the sixty- man roster. A three-player Taxi squad is where teams will carry three extra players on all road trips. It must feature at least a catcher and the other two players can be a pitcher or position player. The Taxi-squad could be good for some teams especially if they want to have players to use so others can get rest.
These changes could be good considering everything that is going on by providing teams with enough options. It will be interesting how teams approach this especially teams that need more depth. This is another storyline to watch this season. For more sports and entertainment visit Belly Up Sports.
