PFL 8: Motorpoint Arena; Cardiff, Wales

We may have seen the end of a legend in MMA. Or at least the realization that that day is coming quickly. Rory MacDonald, fell shocking to 2-4 in the PFL. And it appears he has lost the zip to his fastball. Perhaps all the cage wars finally are taking there toll on him, as it took Dilano Taylor less than a round to finish him, creating a big shock at PFL 8.

“The Postman” once again delivered big as the fifth seed in the welterweight bracket improving to 10-2 overall. Taylor was playing with a minor two-inch reach advantage. And he came inside and got a takedown early in the round. Immediately MacDonald hunted for a submission, but Taylor was able to steer clear of any danger.

Once back on their feet the dup were being deliberate with their striking. However, it did appear that “The Red King” looked a tad off, as he was eating Taylor’s jab over and over again. He was outstruck overall 30-8. And he took on a small cut near his left eye for good measure.

It was a straight right with pinpoint precision to the Canadian’s jaw that crumbled him to the canvas. With Taylor jumping on him and hammering him with some ground-and-pound, referee Marc Goddard had no choice but to waive the contest off at the 3:59 mark.

Big Shock At PFL 8, What Does The 170 Title Fight Look Like

Leaving the cage immediately was MacDonald. And he did so not wearing his gloves. Although, he didn’t leave them on the mat signaling the end of his career. As he walked to the back area, he embraced with Sadibou Sy.

Now Taylor who was the underdog, might not necessarily be so again when he fights “The Swedish Denzel” for the welterweight title. Yes he will have a huge DISADVANTAGE when it comes to reach, but Sy hasn’t exactly been tearing through the competition either.

Taylor, if he can get through Sy’s reach and kicking game can tear him up inside. It’s what has kept him from finishing the journey to become a PFL champion since day one. The 25-year old Taylor is also better at head movement, and staying off the centerline which will force Sy to change targets. Sy, the number two-seed is also open to counter strikes with him arm punching.
