The A’s of Oakland. What is going on with the Green & Gold? For the first time since May of 2021, the Athletics won their third season series in a row. Thanks to a comeback in the sixth inning, the A’s stole the rubber match against the Washington Nationals and won 7-6.
It was looking rough for Oakland early. Starter Alex Wood was pitching well in the first two innings before starting to crumble. He exited after 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs. However, Wood did strike out four batters.
Finally, in the bottom of the fifth inning, the A’s got on the board thanks to a single by Shea Langeliers that brought Lawrence Butler home.
The deficit got worse, however, in the sixth inning. Washington scored two more runs against reliever Mitch Spence (W, 1-1) and made it a 6-1 game.
Then, the comeback began.
Oakland’s Sixth Inning Miracle
It started with Abraham Toro walking on five pitches. Then, JJ Bleday hit a double to center field and brought Toro to third base. With two outs and two men on base, Tyler Nevin came to the plate. After seeing a sinker and a fastball from Derek Law (L, 0-1), he swung on the third pitch and brought Toro home.
The line just kept on going. Rather than hear what happened from me, let the A’s NBC Sports broadcast take you the rest of the way.

Washington would not stand a chance after that. Lucas Erceg took care of them in the eighth inning, including making an outstanding play.

Closer Mason Miller (S, 3) came in for the ninth inning to close things down. If any doubters thought he wouldn’t do his thing, they were completely wrong.

Miller recorded nine pitches of at least 100 miles per hour, including reaching as high as 103. He’s bringing the heat, and it is no joke.
With the win, the Athletics won another series and improved to 7-9 on the year.
Up Next
The A’s will welcome the St. Louis Cardinals for a three-game series starting on Monday. Ross Stripling (0-3, 5.50 ERA) will look to get a win on his record, while the Cardinals will combat with Sonny Gray (1-0, 0.00 ERA).
