On Friday morning, the Miami Dolphins added another weapon to their offensive core—wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. The Super Bowl champion heads to the AFC East, signing a one-year deal worth $3 million. With Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle already on the roster, they welcome in another wideout to help quarterback Tua Tagovailoa succeed.
Why It Makes Sense
The 31-year-old wideout appeared in 14 games in 2023, catching 35 passes for 565 yards and three touchdowns for the Baltimore Ravens. His best game was in week 11, where he went off with four catches for 116 yards.
Late in the season, he wasn’t as much of a factor in the offense. Beckham struggled to surpass 40 yards receiving in the final five games of the season, including the postseason.
In Baltimore, he was serving as the WR2 behind Zay Flowers. However, his role will be reduced to WR3 with Hill and Waddle ahead of him in Miami.
There’s no doubt the Dolphins’ receiving core got better with the addition of Beckham Jr. He’s an upgrade over Braxton Berrios, who recorded 27 receptions for 238 yards and a touchdown in 2023.
Both Hill and Waddle surpassed 1,000 yards receiving in 2023. Tua Tagovailoa threw for 4,624 yards as he led the team to the playoffs, and could reach the 5,000 mark if all three of his pass catchers remain healthy and productive.
We should temper expectations, as Odell Beckham Jr has not surpassed 1,000 yards receiving since 2019 as a member of the Cleveland Browns. But, it is nice to see him on an NFL team once again.
Miami looks to get back into the playoffs and challenge the Buffalo Bills for the AFC East.
