It’s no secret that the Chicago White Sox are a horrendous baseball team. The South Siders have the worst record in the entire league. Chicago is among the league’s worst in many major statistical categories. The team is expected to have a fire sale at the trade deadline. Manager Pedro Grifol must be the world’s greatest salesman to be the skipper still. Given how the Sox season has gone, I believe Chicago could break or equal the 1962 New York Mets 120-loss record.
The White Sox Have Had A Mighty Fall From Grace

The South Siders have also only won four series all year. Their offense and pitching staff are ranked among the worst in many major statistical categories. Chicago is expected to have a fire sale at the trade deadline. Players like Tommy Pham, Erick Fedde, Luis Robert Jr., Eloy Jimenez, and others are expected to be traded away. It’s hard to believe it was only three years ago that the White Sox were in the postseason.
The White Sox Offense Is The Worse In The League
Embed from Getty ImagesChicago’s offense is the worst in the entire league. It’s kind of shocking that this team hasn’t been no-hit or become MLB’s 25th perfect game. The only players who’ve been productive for Chicago this season are Tommy Pham, Paul DeJong, and Gavin Sheets. Pham and DeJong will most likely be traded. While Luis Robert Jr. and Eloy Jimenez have combined to only play in 45 games, Chicago wouldn’t be much better even if they were healthier. The Sox are averaging a league-worst 3.02 runs per game. They are also last in batting average, OPS, hits, and runs scored. When Chicago’s most productive offensive players are inevitably traded, the White Sox offense will become even more punchless.
The Pitching Staff Is Only Going To Get Worse
Embed from Getty ImagesWhen a team doesn’t have quality pitching, they aren’t going to win too many games. The Sox pitching staff has a combined ERA of 5.03. They’ve also surrendered a league-high 84 home runs. Chicago’s only players on the pitching staff who have been worthwhile are Erick Fedde, Garrett Crotchet, and relievers Jordan Leasure and Steven Wilson. Leasure and Wilson could perhaps be future key bullpen arms. However, it takes more than a couple of good bullpen arms to win. The Sox have no competent pitchers outside of those four players. After the trade deadline, the Sox’s pitching will only get worse.
Chicago Might Reach New Levels Of Ineptitude
Embed from Getty ImagesThe last team that came close to breaking the 1962 New York Mets record for ineptitude was the 2003 Detroit Tigers. The Tigers lost 119 games that year. The Sox will more than likely execute a fire sale at the trade deadline. This will mean that later in the year, they will be fielding a team that resembles the Charlotte Knights more than the Chicago White Sox. Younger players go through lots of growing pains. Given how bad the team has been at player development; young White Sox call-ups might go through more than most. With a big transition about to happen on the south side, the White Sox have a big chance to equal or break the Mets’ loss record.
