Blake Snell is suffering the consequences of holding out of spring training for more money. This was because he decided to heed the advice of his arrogant agent Scott Boras. While Snell trained at “facilities” owned by Boras, he now realizes it isn’t the same as facing live hitters in a game situation. As the first half of the season is getting close to the end, it’s obvious that Blake Snell is struggling. Scott Boras even went as far as to blame the team owners for Snell’s struggles. However, Boras has nobody but himself to blame for Blake Snell’s underperformance so far this year.

The Owners (Finally) Stood Up To Scott Boras

During the offseason, there seemed to be a collective crackdown by the owners against Scott Boras. Over the years, Boras would get owners and general managers to cave to his demands and overpay for the league’s premier talent. However, this season, the owners and general managers let all of Boras’s clients flounder on the free agent market. Boras even turned down a $150 million offer from the Yankees to sign Blake Snell. Despite the team’s refusal to give Snell top dollars, Boras had Snell hold out well into spring training.

With teams refusing to budge, Boras finally caved. Snell signed with the San Francisco Giants for two years and $62 million with an opt-out after this season. However, the consequences of missing most of spring training would be just the beginning for Snell. Due to missing most of spring training, Snell would be forced to miss the beginning of the season. They both would need time to ramp up and get conditioned to be starters. Upon returning to their respective rotations, Snell and Boras are now realizing the importance of facing live hitters in spring training.

Blake Snell has gotten off to a rough start in 2024. He is currently 0-3 with an ERA of 9.51, 31 strikeouts, and a 1.944 WHIP. Snell is also currently on the injured list for the second time already this season. The reigning Cy Young winner also has yet to pitch more than four innings in a game. This was a big concern that prospective teams had about him despite Snell winning the Cy Young award last year.

Boras Is Wrong To Blame The Owners For Snell’s Rocky Start

Recently, Scott Boras blamed MLB owners for Snell’s awful start. However, Snell’s issues this season are only vindicating the owners further. If Boras would just put his arrogance aside; he would figure out that it was all by his own doing. It was Boras who advised Snell to turn down the Yankees offer. Boras also recommended him to hold out for most of spring training until he received a better deal. Thanks to Boras’s failed strategy, Snell was not only forced to sign for much less, but his struggles are further hurting his future value. All the owners did was what they thought was right for their teams.

Scott Boras’s disastrous offseason is blowing up in both he and Blake Snell’s faces. Snell not only had to sign a much smaller deal but his future value is being negatively impacted by his struggles. He is struggling in large part due to missing most of spring training for a much larger deal. Boras has nobody to blame but himself for putting Snell in the position he’s currently in. His failures this offseason might hurt Snell going into next season as well.
