The New York Giants will not have star running back Saquon Barkley for the next 4-8 weeks because of a high ankle sprain. It will be interesting to see when Barkley returns. He left the game in the second quarter against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road and Saquon Barkley did not return. Saquon Barkley out for the Giants; what this means moving forward.
He was on crutches and in a walking boot on the sideline. New York came back from 18 points in the second-half thanks to Daniel Jones. Barkley finished the game with 10 yards rushing on eight carries. He also caught four passes for 27 yards receiving.
So far this season, Saquon Barkley has rushed for 237 yards on 37 carries and one touchdown. He has also caught 11 passes for 74 yards receiving.
The New York Giants do not want to rush him back. They will most likely not make the playoffs anyways this season. If Barkley does not return by the Week 9 game on Monday night November 4 against the Dallas Cowboys at home. I don’t expect him to be back until after the Week 11 bye when New York plays the Chicago Bears on the road on Sunday, November 24.
Wayne Gallman Jr. will take over as the starting running back. He only rushed for 13 yards on five carries in Barkley’s absence on Sunday. So far this season, Gallman Jr. has rushed for 30 yards on seven carries and a touchdown. He has also caught three passes for 24 yards receiving. It will be interesting to see who the Giants bring on the roster to split carries with Wayne Gallman Jr.
They could promote rookie Jonathan Hilliman off the practice squad. Paul Perkins is not around anymore because he was claimed off of waivers by the Detroit Lions.
C.J. Anderson, Jay Ajayi, Spencer Ware, Doug Martin, Orleans Darkwa, LeGarrette Blount, Cameron Artis-Payne, or maybe they could trade for Miami Dolphins running back Kenyan Drake who will be a free agent at the end of the season.
I am sure that Drake wouldn’t mind getting out of that mess in Miami. I think Gallman will get the job done, but he is going to have to split carries with somebody else. Hilliman actually played well in the preseason and I actually thought he was going to make the roster.
The best option for the New York Giants would be to sign Jay Ajayi. He would be the best at running the RPO with Daniel Jones because out of all the running backs I named on this list, Ajayi is probably the best running back available and I am surprised he is not signed anywhere.
New York is currently 1-2 so far this season and they will host the Washington Redskins (0-3) this Sunday. They have a favorable schedule coming up. Wayne Gallman Jr. is one of the hot commodities for the waiver wire in fantasy football this week.
