I bet when you went to bed last night the last thing you ever thought you’d be waking up to was the Miami Dolphins, fresh off firing their seemingly creative OC, hiring 67 year old Chan Gailey. Well buddy, do I have some news for you. It’s what I already said. Chan Gailey is the Dolphin’s OC.
After hearing this news, I’m pretty sure this is exactly what every person, not just Dolphin’s fans did.
Is it fair to say that I think that Miami could have waited a little bit before signing their new OC? I guess Flores really really really likes what Chan Gailey brings to the table. I’ll say it’s odd because the league is sort of trending towards younger guys and Chan Gailey is the opposite of that in terms of being a football coach. Not saying that Chan can’t get it done, but you know and I know that this move is peculiar. It feels like when in Independence Day and they’re recruiting anybody that has any kind of flying experience and Randy Quaid rolls up and says…
It’s like Chris Grier and company walked up to a bunch of people and asked if anybody had any coaching experience and Gailey said: “I can coach, I’m offense.”
Once upon a time, Chan Gailey served as the Dolphin’s offensive coordinator. He was part of a unit that went to the playoffs in 2000-2001. They relied heavily on the running game with Lamar Smith(can’t believe I’m writing a blog and Lamar Smith is relevant to it) and played good defense.
In 2015, Gailey wound up with the Jets and posted the 10th best offense in the league. His QB, Ryan Fitzpatrick. The plot thickens right? He retired the following year.
It’s hard to say what kind of offense the Dolphins will implore now. Gailey is more of a spread guy but the Dolphins like to also use a fullback, which I prefer. Hopefully, the offense will use both spread and under center strategies. I believe that lining up under center creates more mismatches and opens play-action more than in the gun.
It also needs to be said that Flores and management believe that Chan Gailey is the right guy to mentor a rookie QB(Tua hopefully). I mean, that better of been the #1 question they asked themselves when they decided to dust off Chan Gailey.
I suppose the ultimate question for us followers of this team that appears to be heading into the right direction for the first time in years, is do we trust what this regime is doing> Have they earned that trust? Obviously, it doesn’t matter what we think, but wondering if this new brain trust truly knows what they’re doing isn’t weird. It’s pretty natural.
Well, it’s only 8:30 on New Year’s Eve. I guess the Dolphins have enough time to bewilder us all a few more times before a new decade begins. Here’s to everyone having an awesome and safe New Year’s.
By The Way- Sorry for not using a picture of Chan Gailey in Dolphin’s gear. I couldn’t find one. If you can, post it.
By The Way Again- Let me be the first to call our new offensive coordinator; 4 Chan Gailey. So so funny. Man, that’s good stuff.
