Currently, the guards score more than they pass the ball. It is the Forwards and Centers that create the game for the team.
This UAB Blazers player is versatile and the statistics for each game indicate this. As always Angela Vendrell with her XXII century numbers and standing out from a very young age. In the second division of professional players in Spain, she was already at a great level. It was only a matter of time before she went to the NCAAW.
Offensive production doesn’t really say the value of a player. In Angela’s case, she dominates all aspects of basketball. Her numbers this season are not crazy; she only averaged 6.8 per game. But you have to analyze her whole game to understand the value she has.
Scoring Points Isn’t Everything
Just looking at the statistics, it is normal to think that Vendrell plays as a point guard. She has a size of 6’1″, making her able to play in all positions on the court. Angela produces more in rebounds and assists than anyone else in her roster. If she made statistics her priority, she could record triple-doubles quite easily. This ability makes this player a fundamental piece for her coach.
In an interview, I did she told me about this:
“My favorite thing is to give assists and move the ball but I also like to put baskets. What happens is that in my team there are many players who are very good at scoring but not creating a game for the others, then my coach is looking to create a game and a balance if it makes sense… hahaha”.
A role in the team that has served perfectly, conquering the C-USA in the 2019 season.
On defense, her numbers speak for themselves. She has averaged more than one block and one steal per game. The athleticism and the IQ that she has makes her an elite defender. In the attack, she will improve in the future. Angela is aware of what she has to train to take advantage of her height in a mismatch. I have had the opportunity to talk to her about this. She told me that by improving her movements under the hoop she will be able to take advantage against stronger rivals. Also by getting shooting fouls or being more agile. Although without scoring too much we see Angela Vendrell with her XXII century numbers.
Before suspending all sporting events due to the COVID-19 virus, the UABs were able to have a farewell celebration for their seniors. It wasn’t the best circumstance since they lost due the conference tournament. But at least they were able to say goodbye, unlike others.
