Welcome to Belly Up’s Over-Reactionary Coach’s Hot Seat Scale for NFL Week 10! (Or BUORCHSS, for short.) I’m late again with the week’s hot seat scale, but I’m enjoying the Thanksgiving holiday by taking the week off from work. That means lots of me-time. Even though I’ve had lots of me-time this week, the hot seat scale never stops and NFL Week 11 was no exception! If you’re unfamiliar with this scale format, go back to the Week 1 column and familiarize yourself before reading on. (Or don’t. Whatever.)
Coach-for-Life
Pete Carroll, Kevin Stefanski, Sean Peyton, Mike Tomlin, Mike Vrabel, Romeo Crennell, Vic Fangio, Frank Reich, Andy Reid, Sean McVay.
Several coaches jumped back into the top echelon of the hot seat scale in NFL Week 11. This includes Carroll, Vrabel, and Crennell. Tomlin has been at this level of the scale since Week 1 and that trend continued after his Steelers took an easy win in Jacksonville. Fangio’s Broncos won an ugly game against the Dolphins to stay in playoff contention. Reich’s Colts beat Green Bay in what was arguably the most entertaining game of Week 11. Reid’s Chiefs got a measure of revenge on Sunday night in Las Vegas. McVay’s Rams beat the Buccaneers on Monday night in what could be a preview of a playoff matchup.
Tepid
Kliff Kingsbury, Raheem Morris, Ron Rivera, Matt Rhule, John Harbaugh, Bill Belichick, Brian Flores, Matt LaFleur, Mike McCarthy, Mike Zimmer, Jon Gruden, Bruce Arians.
Several coaches also jumped back into this section of the hot seat scale in NFL Week 11. This includes Rivera (whose Football Team defense dismantled the Bengals) and Rhule (whose Panthers shut out the Lions). Kingsbury’s Cardinals nearly kept their winning streak going with a win in Seattle, but couldn’t pull off the win over the Seahawks. The Cowboys helped Mike McCarthy (no relation) keep his job with a big win over Zimmer’s Vikings. After a mini-win streak, Belichick’s Patriots slid back in the playoff race following a loss in Houston.
Instant Pot
Doug Pedersen, Zac Taylor, Matt Patricia, Anthony Lynn.
Following consecutive losses, Pedersen finds himself back in this level of the NFL hot seat scale following a Week 11 loss in Cleveland. The latest loss has Eagles fans clamoring for Pedersen to bench Carson Wentz in favor of rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts. According to Pedersen, that’s not going to happen.
Doug Pederson on why he isn’t considering benching Carson Wentz: “I think you’re sending the wrong message to your football team that this season is over, and that’s a bad message.”

Meanwhile, Taylor’s Bengals lost rookie quarterback Joe Burrow for the rest of this season and possibly longer after a gruesome knee injury in Washington. Patricia is back in the Instant Pot after a shutout loss in Carolina where the offense managed only 185 total yards of offense. Lynn has climbed out of Hell after his Chargers held off a late rally to the Jets.
Circle of Hell: Level 8
Doug Marrone, Adam Gase.
Have you ever seen two coaches comfortable with failure more than Marrone and Gase? Marrone’s Jaguars took an early 3-0 lead on Pittsburgh… and then managed to surrender the next 27 as they fell to 1-9. The Jaguars have a young defense, but they set a new record this week in their latest loss:
The Jaguars lost to the Steelers 27-3 and have now given up 24 points in nine consecutive games, which is the longest streak in franchise history. All of those have been losses, which ties the longest single-season losing streak in franchise history…. https://t.co/bTEP70CsFJ

Gase’s Jets also took an early 6-0 lead in Los Angeles… and then managed to surrender the next 24 on their way to a 34-28 loss. Rookie quarterback Justin Herbert shredded the Jets’ secondary for 366 yards and three touchdowns. The Jets made a game of it in the second half, but couldn’t complete the comeback. But the most entertaining aspect of this game was the post-game press conference when Gase gave one of the most BIZARRE answers to a question about play-calling:

If he survives Black Monday on January 4, I will eat my shorts.
Toast
Bill O’Brien, Dan Quinn.
Bye Week
Sean McDermott, Matt Nagy, Joe Judge, Kyle Shanahan.
