There’s an argument to be made that professional athletes are better than amateurs. I’m not here to make that argument. Sure, common man golf is more fun and casual than professional, but it’s clear watching the PGA Tour, the LPGA Tour, and even the old guys in the Champions Tour are better than I could dream of. So, when I see guys like Tiger Woods make shots like this under pressure at the biggest tournament of the year:
Tiger Woods 16th Hole (2005)
Or this shot:
Tiger Woods 16th Hole (2019)
Okay, Tiger Woods might be better than anyone that has ever played the game, so it’s a little unfair to compare him to amateurs. But then you have professionals that do common man golf things. The things that I would do on the 10th hole after a few too many drinks.
And that’s exactly what happened at the 2019 Masters when Zach Johnson stepped up to the 13th tee.
Zach Johnson Common Man Golf Moment (2019)
Thank you Zach. You made every weekend golfer feel like he or she can be a professional too… only if they changed the channel after that shot. Alright, so I’ve been a little rude to Zach. He is a two-time major championship winner, so maybe I’m nitpicking here. But hey, sometimes it’s the small things that make professionals look like common man golfers.
Do you want to feel even better about your golf game? Even the greats can get frustrated. I know, it’s still on the green but we need to find some flaw with his game.
Tiger Woods “Common Man” Moment (2010)
Who knows what we’ll see at the Masters this year. Maybe we’ll have some Tiger Woods miraculous shots, but maybe we’ll Jordan Spieth at the 2016 Masters meltdowns. That’s the beauty of golf. On one day you can look like a common man golfer, and the next day look like the greatest of all time.
