Cowboys in Week 16
The Dallas Cowboys had a wonderful Sunday yesterday. First, they clinched the NFC East title. This happened after the Las Vegas Raiders beat the Denver Broncos just before Dallas played later that night. That may seem strange as neither of those teams plays in the same conference as the Cowboys. It actually came down to the fifth tiebreaker metric for the NFL playoff rules. So even if the Philadelphia Eagles won out and Dallas lost all of their reaming games, the Cowboys would still sit atop the NFC East.
Most Dallas fans were elated. America’s Team won their first division title since the 2018 season. I personally, as a pessimistic Cowboys supporter, was more concerned than anything. Dallas played the Washington Football Team Sunday night. I thought Dallas was going to lose to Washington because they had nothing else to play for at that point. I could not have been more wrong.
The Cowboys handled the Washington Football Team easily with a 56-14 win. Quarterback Dak Prescott got the monkey off his back and threw for 330 YDS and 4 TD in the victory. The Dallas defense also came to the party ready to go. They forced two interceptions during the contest. One of which was by defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence who actually to his pick all the way back to the house for a defensive touchdown. The other was made by breakout star Trevon Diggs for his 11th of the season. Washington was understandably frustrated with the game. So much so that two of their defensive players decided to take it out on each other.
The Rest of 2021 for the Cowboys
This season has been a good one for the Cowboys. So much so that their fans are once again starting to say this is the year we start a new dynasty. Personally, I am a little sick of hearing that talk. I have heard it almost every year since Dallas’ last Super Bowl victory in the mid-90s. Dynasties are so difficult to form in the modern NFL. You need to have a talented roster, a great coaching staff, and wonderful ownership to start one that lasts at least five years and win two league championships during that period.
The talent is there for this season, but holding on to that is another thing. The Cowboys are currently projected to be over the cap for next season. This means it will be difficult to bring back many contributors to this current ream.
Another problem with creating a new dynasty is the ownership in Dallas. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has turned the franchise into the model for an NFL organization to build and maintain a revenue stream. He, however, has done more harm than good to actually make them a winning franchise. Jones is not just the owner of the Cowboys. He also happens to be their general manager. This means he controls both the big picture items such as building the business of the franchise but also has to make day-to-day decisions about the team. That is tough to do for even the best of football minds.
That is why I do not see Dallas starting a new dynasty anytime in the immediate future. Until Jones is willing to give up a little control to other people in the organization, the Cowboys will not have a chance at creating another dynasty.
