As we approach the end of the week, it’s clear that we all miss the game of football. But, it’s okay! For New York Giants fans, there’s some news and rumors we should address. Let’s get started.
Mitchell Trubisky Comes to the New York Giants
Free agency doesn’t start until March 14th. However, we shouldn’t be surprised if a Buffalo Bills quarterback signs with Big Blue.
Before I continue, Josh Allen is not coming to New Jersey. But, backup Mitchell Trubisky is a potential signing. According to author Zack Rosenblatt, they shouldn’t rule him out of their plans.
Trubisky has a relationship with head coach Brian Daboll, who was his offensive coordinator in Buffalo.
MY THOUGHTS
Last season, the New York Giants had Mike Glennon and Jake Fromm backup Daniel Jones. Those two aren’t the best options to have on your team.
Adding Trubisky to the team is a major upgrade, and will bring competition to the quarterback position. Pushing Jones to be at his best is the only way the Giants will contend for the NFC East next season.
Of course, the team has made it clear they believe in Jones. When your owner admits they’ve done everything possible to “screw this kid over”, it shows that Jones shouldn’t receive all the blame for the team’s struggles.
Daboll has mentioned they will find out what Jones does well and build around his strengths. But, having a guy like Trubisky as your backup gives Big Blue a quality QB to turn to in the event Jones gets hurt/struggles.
Saquon Barkley Could Be On His Way Out
After an outstanding rookie year, the former number two overall pick could be on his way out. According to CBS Sports, Saquon is one of eight players who should be traded this offseason. With injuries plaguing the star RB from playing to his potential, the Giants can save between $12 and $15 million by moving on from him.
MY THOUGHTS
As much as it would benefit the Giants, it wouldn’t be good to trade Saquon. He’s a generational back who’s capable of making big plays every time he gets the ball.
One of the Giants’ big issues to fix is the offensive line. If GM Joe Schoen can get guys to improve that position (ex: James Daniels), Saquon could have a bounce-back year next season.
Saquon can make plays both in the running and passing game. Having him on the field will make the offense tough to stop.
He does need to stay healthy. If he has another injury-riddled season, we will never see him again as a Giant.
Kayvon Thibodeaux to the Giants?
After being regarded as a top-three pick, experts have this former Oregon player falling in the draft. There have been concerns that Thibodeaux “doesn’t play with the same fire” as other prospects, which is a reason why he may fall out of the top five.
New York has two top 10 picks, and they could use one on him if he does fall. As an outside linebacker, he fits the team’s defensive scheme.
MY THOUGHTS
The New York Giants have many positions to address. If Thibodeaux falls to them, they should take him without hesitation. His game tape shows he’s a menace that will strike fear to offensive lines for years to come.
If the concerns about his motor are true, then the Giants should steer away from him.
But, if they’re false, you cannot pass on a talent like this. Big Blue could come out of this year’s draft with a steal.
