Geno Smith has been quite the revelation through the first three weeks of the NFL’s 2022 season. According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Geno Smith is ranked eighth out of 33 qualified quarterbacks. Geno’s previous highest ranking was 32/37 back in 2014, so this season has been surprising thus far. Nonetheless, the veteran quarterback seems to have learned from his past failures and is finally putting it together. In his ninth NFL season, Geno Smith looks to have finally found a place that embraces him and allows him to be the best version of himself.
Among the surprise/feel-good stories in the NFL this year, Geno Smith’s story is near the top of the list.
With that being said, on behalf of Seahawk fans, Geno needs to STOP playing so well! Seattle’s week one win over Russell Wilson’s Broncos was sweet, but this isn’t a season where Seattle needs to win games. If anything, they should be trying their hardest to LOSE games so they can secure a top-five pick in the 2023 NFL draft. The 49ers pushed Seattle around like I thought they would, but against the Falcons, Geno played great and nearly won the game. I’m all for being competitive, but two of the first three games were too close for my liking.
The last thing Seahawks faithful need is to be out of the running for a top quarterback in 2023 and be forced to endure another season of Geno Smith. No disrespect to Geno Smith, but in today’s league, you need difference makers at quarterback, and Geno isn’t that. At best, he’s a fill-in starter/bridge quarterback. A good veteran to have in the locker room, but history shows he can’t be trusted for an entire season.
Have No Fear Seahawk Fans…
Luckily for the Seahawks, they’re about to face a slew of teams that are clearly better than them! With upcoming games against the Lions, Saints, Cardinals, and Chargers, that’s easily an 0-4 record. They may be able to beat the Giants, giving them win number 2, but then they face the Cardinals, Buccaneers, Raiders, and Rams. Four more teams that I feel are clearly better than the Seahawks. By week 14, I predict the Seahawks will have a record of 2-10 and will be in great shape to receive the no.1 overall pick.
Now… I know it sounds like I’m hating, but you’re severely mistaken if you think I enjoy rooting against my team. The Seahawks have been my favorite team since I first began watching football. But the only way I can stay sane is by believing that the Seahawks have a bigger-picture goal that revolves around drafting (hopefully) their next franchise quarterback. If the Seahawks were to miss out on drafting a quarterback in 2023, I’m not sure I’d recover in time for the 2023 season.
In all seriousness, I’m very happy for Geno and his resurgence this season. Whether it lasts or not, only time will tell. But it sure feels good to see a player who got relegated to the bench have some success and have a fanbase embrace him.
