Brooklyn, New York
God performs miracles all the time if we look close enough. The gift of life, the parting of the Red Sea, modern medicine, and so many more. Well, in the world of boxing it appears as one has happened. Deontay Wilder has turned over a new leaf. At least so far during fight prep for his battle with former sparring partner Robert Helenius.
“The Bronze Bomber” has a different look in his eyes, and has acted differently. There is an inner peace to him now. To many this won’t matter one lick. However, to those on the inside; it’s apparent, whether they choose to recognize it or not. The 36-year old Tuscaloosa native is in New York starting the second-phase of his career. One that will last as he steadfastly put it:
“A lot of the media love to be first instead of being correct. But you hear it from my mouth, I only have three-more years, they gonna go by fast. So, it’s a great feeling to receive your roses while your alive”.
And perhaps that calmness of knowing it’s almost over has relaxed the 6’7″ giant. Maybe it’s the three Tyson Fury wars, the ridicule he took for a laundry list of “excuses”, or maybe finally seeing himself turn into a statue had something to do with it.
Wilder Turns Over A New Leaf… What Does That Mean For The Division
With the self imposed three-years left, it means roughly four-to-six fights if completely healthy. While he hasn’t been calling out others, Oleksandr Usyk is confirmed to be sitting ringside. Whereas he used to walk around with a scowl on his face and a monstrous posse, he now smiles, engages people on the street, and with a much less sized traveling group.
And this can be very dangerous for all the “top dogs” at heavyweight. Malik Scott used this camp to hammer home the basics, and added in some new wrinkles into his pupil. And he looks crisp and sharp for his battle Saturday night at the Barclay’s Center.
There’s still the toying of a battle with Andy Ruiz; which of all the possibilities should be the easiest to make. Anthony Joshua has been teased. But if what we have seen from training so far is a sign of things to come, he may run the table for the rest of his career. And do so in dramatic eye-popping fashion. Gone seems to be the stand upright and swing away game plan. Because now he has the look of a complete fighter.
And whether he ever says publicly or not, you have to believe on thing. If he was able to take out Usyk, he’d love one more crack at Fury to become undisputed. Thus accomplishing something he said he wanted to do when winning the WBC belt. One name one face for the division.
