WCVB-5 Sports Anchor Bob Halloran Is Retiring
Emmy-Award-winning sports anchor, Bob Halloran, one of the best people in the sports media is retiring from Channel 5 in Boston in May after 38 years of being in the industry. Recently I had the great opportunity to talk to Halloran over a video call talking about his career and what’s next for him in retirement. I asked him what made him become a sportscaster. In the first grade, his elementary school had a career day and he wrote down that his idol was Howard Cosell, one of the most legendary sports broadcasters.
His first job came in May 1985, down in the Cape Cod area. That was only the beginning of his spectacular TV industry career. A few years later he was the News Director and sports anchor at WCVX-TV down in Hyannis, Massachusetts from August 1990-May 1993. Shortly after that, he moved on to work for WPRI in Providence, RI as a news and sports anchor from June 1993-August 1997. Next, he worked at FOX-25 in Boston for a couple of years before moving to ESPN for the next three years.
Working at ESPN and Then WCVB-5
Bob had written columns for ESPN.com and also hosted interview shows. Halloran mentioned to me he remains in contact with ESPN sports anchor John Buccigross who has been at the station since 1996. The well-traveled Halloran has been liked by all of his colleagues at many different stops throughout his great career. In January 2003, Halloran joined WCVB-5 as a freelance anchor reporter, then in 2014, he was given the full-time role. I asked him if he had learned a lot from his peers. He gives credit to former sports director Mike Lynch, Duke Castiglione, Josh Brogadir, and Naoko Funayama. Halloran has done a lot of great things over the years. He has been to Super Bowls and interviewed many athletes and his funny sense of humor gets him feedback, especially when the station’s segment one-minute drill draws the attention of the viewers.
My Personal Experience Working With Halloran
I had the pleasure to work with Halloran one year ago as a sports intern at the station. He taught me a lot about his career and what are the keys to success in the sports media industry. Even to this day he and I stay in constant communication regarding articles that I write and get feedback from him. I can’t thank him enough for taking the time to read my stuff and look for what should be improved on. Having a great resource and someone that wants to help you out means a lot because they have their daily lives and work to do and making time for others is great to see.
Retirement Life for Bob
What will post-retirement look like for Mr.Halloran? I had the chance to ask him. He mentioned that he will be working 24-32 hours a week being a golf pro. He will be working at a pro shop and helping kids be better at the sport. Halloran has been a huge golfer. He likes to watch and follow the PGA Tour and knows a lot about it. Also, he will be continuing his passion for writing and performing music that we talked about during the interview. Halloran hopes to have an open mic night shortly when ready so he can show people his talents on the music side. Wrapping up his career it has been a stellar ride with a lot of award-winning achievements. He has written books and has been the face of Boston sports media for a long time.
