The Green Bay Packers and the New York Jets have reportedly agreed to trade terms for Aaron Rodgers. Drafted in 2005, the Packers have seen a whole lot of success with Rodgers behind center. The decision to move on from their future Hall-of-Famer appears to be at least partially mutual. The Packers organization had a similar situation at the end of Brett Favre’s time in Green Bay, but this split is definitely more amicable. One day we will look back at the Aaron Rodgers era in Green Bay, but right now we look forward as the Jordan Love era begins.
What We Know About Jordan Love
There is plenty of uncertainty about what this coming season will look like with a new QB in charge, but here is what we know about Jordan Love. He knows the system. Drafted in 2020, Love has been in the Matt LaFleur system for three seasons. He also sat behind one of the most talented QBs in NFL history. We know that the Packers believe in him. That does not mean that they expect an MVP season in year one as the starter, but they have confidence in what they saw in draft prep, and what they have seen in practice, preseason, and spot starts.
What Weapons Jordan Love Will Have
The national pundits love to drag the Packers through the mud because they have not drafted a WR or offensive skill player in round one since 2002. Amazingly those same pundits look over the massive talent the Packers have acquired in rounds two through seven over the years. The cupboard is not bare for Jordan Love as he takes over. The Packers have a dynamic duo in the backfield with Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon. Last year the Packers drafted two WRs, Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs, who had productive rookie years. Watson is a future star. Then we will have to see what the Packers do in the draft this year. Surely, they will draft a TE and at least one more WR at some point in this draft.
What to Expect in Year One of Jordan Love
I believe it is fair to expect the Packers to contend for the division this season. The Vikings did not improve this offseason, and the Lions will always…well, Lion and the Bears are still two to three years away. The NFC North is a weak division right now, which opens the door for early success for Jordan Love. Head Coach Matt LaFleur runs an offensive system that is kind to QBs, and I am not sure if Rodgers ever actually ran the offense completely the way LaFleur designed it. A Super Bowl run would be a big surprise, but a nine-win season is definitely in reach. As a lifelong Packer fan, I am excited as the Jordan Love era begins.
