UFC 297: Scotiabank Arena; Toronto, Ontario Canada

It’s good to be champion. And now the new UFC middleweight champion has a couple of options at his feet. But we might have the main event for the highly anticipated April 13th UFC 300 card. With one of those having a built in rivalry that goes way deeper than just two men fighting for a gold strap.

After Dricus Du Plessis ended the reign of Sean Strickland before it began (compliments of a 48-47 2x, 48-47 split decision), there’s a fork in the road. And the new middleweight champion made it clear which way is the one he prefers most.

Israel Adesanya get your a** back in the UFC so we can settle the score”.

However, the former champ although possibly salivating is off the radar still. But one who immediately opened his mouth is Khamzat Chimaev saying “see you soon” on his social media. While on paper that may be somewhat intriguing because of their offenses, it’s not likely to happen. At least if those in control of their falculties look at the big picture. “BORZ” despite being undefeated has no wins against anyone in the top-ten in the division. The only one he can hang on his head is beating Kamaru Usman off his couch.

Run It Back

There can be an argument for Strickland winning the fight, it was close. But going round-by-round Du Plessis just offensively did a little more. Although he was sloppy at times with wild swings and getting himself off balance. Which could have been disastrous for him if Strickland had just a little more offense in his arsenal.

Or at least would keep doing what was working (ie t-kicks). So would it be nice to see this again? Sure. Especially since his effective defense will keep him in all his fights. However, outside of winning the strap; he was a middle of the road fighter.

We Might Have The Fight We’ve Wanted

Du Plessis is well rounded, and has proven he can make adjustments on the fly. Although throughout this battle he continued to eat Strickland’s jabs. And those adjustments like switching stances will be key.

Adesanya isn’t highly defensive minded. He relies more on feints, slick movement, and countering. It opens up for what could be a spectacular knockout for the new champion. Thanks to his head hunting love, although as a southpaw Du Plessis does mix in body work more. Plus the threat of a takedown is in play. Especially since Adesanya needs to work at range. His achillies heel is fighting in close.

But when you battle a sniper, you can’t be sloppy. Although Du Plessis also proved he does have a solid chin. Adesanya will need more than one shot to regain the belt. Then again, one pinpoint shot is sometimes all it takes.
