LiAngelo Ball, the middle brother of the famed Ball basketball trio, has carved his unique path in the sport. While his older brother Lonzo and younger brother LaMelo have established themselves as NBA players, LiAngelo’s journey has been less conventional, filled with challenges and triumphs.
Early Success and High School Controversy
Born in 1998, LiAngelo, alongside his brothers, was raised in a basketball-centric environment. Their father, LaVar Ball, instilled a strong work ethic and belief in their potential. LiAngelo, like his brothers, excelled at Chino Hills High School, leading the team to a state championship in 2016. However, his career took a sudden turn in 2017 when he, along with two teammates, were suspended indefinitely from UCLA for shoplifting in China. This incident garnered significant media attention and cast a shadow over his future prospects.
Navigating a Different Path
Undeterred by the controversy, LiAngelo Ball decided to play professional basketball overseas. He started his professional career with the Lithuanian team Prienai, showcasing his shooting skills and athleticism. He later played for the Detroit Pistons in the NBA G League and the Los Angeles Ballers of the Junior Basketball Association, founded by his father.
Chasing the NBA Dream
LiAngelo’s ultimate goal remained the NBA. He received a non-guaranteed training camp contract with the Charlotte Hornets in 2021 and again in 2022, but ultimately did not make the final roster. He would play in the NBA G League with the Greensboro Swarm, before recently deciding to play in the Mexican league for the Astros de Jalisco.
Finding His Own Voice
LiAngelo’s story is one of resilience and perseverance. He has faced public scrutiny and setbacks but continues to work towards his dream. While his path may not have mirrored that of his brothers, he has carved his own space in the world of basketball, showing his talent and determination on the court.
Looking Ahead
LiAngelo Ball’s journey continues to unfold. Whether he eventually cracks an NBA roster again or excels in the CIBACOPA with the Astros, his story serves as an inspiration for athletes facing adversity and pursuing their dreams, regardless of the path they take.
