Barclay’s Center: Brooklyn, New York

In sports, a series is normally over after seven times. And after splitting six amatuer fights between them, and bad blood spilling over this week one could have assumed this seventh battle between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia would be it. Well guess again. After the unprofessionalism of missing weight by 3.2 pounds, and his antics King Ry is world’s best troll, actor worthy of an Oscar, or certifiable. You can decide where you land.

Because of the knowledge of each other Garcia wasn’t really worried about true power coming back at him. Which helped his confidence. It didn’t hurt his hand speed and power is better than Haney’s. His right hand proved he’s more than just a left hook. But he wasn’t uncontrollably reckless either in the ring. Although his shoulder rolls at times looked more like a Michael Phelps back stroke.

He has to take a deep look in the mirror post-fight. Admitting his cardio wasn’t where it needed to be and wonder if he was laser focused, and stayed off social media would it have helped it. Fighting in short bursts no matter the skill advatange usually doesn’t pay off in the end.

Then again Haney who in the past has been hit hard, got popped like never before in his career. While his defense is totally questionable, he did spend time staring at Garcia too much. Not to mention clinching way too much. Both fighters if it does get run back for an eighth time need to add the most dangerous punch there is. Since they will spend the majority of time in the phone booth, a massive uppercut would be helpful.

King Ry Is World’s Biggest Riddle In Boxing

Haney’s early gameplan of going to the body wasn’t a bad one. But a little more head movement would be helpful. Especially if he’d like to build any sustained offense. He did show some resiliance, but once his legs were going, that’s all she wrote.

Garcia landing 41% of his power punches performed better than expected. But whether just a troll or not, his mental status is a concern. Then again he’s joined a select few of those that thrive in chaos. See Jon Jones. It also makes you think who ended their relationship: Garcia or Joe Goossen.

Haney’s resume is better, and he was on an upward trajectory. The loss and the way it went down, plateau’s it. But does it need to happen again. Yea… eight, nine, and ten times. They’re the perfect foils for each other. Unless Haney decides to forgo trying to become undisputed again, and move to 147 now.
