Sooooo, it’s been nine days since the Dolphins officially fired OC Chad O’Shea and unofficially hired retired Chan Gailey to fill the same role. I feel it’s important to carefully use the word officially because as of today, Chan Gailey hasn’t been officially hired as the Miami Dolphin’s offensive coordinator.
You’d think that if you went through the trouble of finding what golf course Gailey was on to lure him out of his three-year retirement that having him sign his contract would be a formality. But here we are. Gailey still hasn’t signed and it’s starting to be noticeable.
What possible reason could there be as to why Chan Gailey, a guy nobody else wanted to on their staff, still isn’t officially the Dolphin’s offensive coordinator? Perhaps, the Dolphins panicked for some unGodly reason and when they fired O’Shea felt compelled to fill that position immediately. That seems unlikely because I would think that if you’re bringing in a guy who is 67 and has also been out of the game for three years that you had a pretty good idea that you were doing this for weeks.
Maybe Gailey, filled with emotion or drunk on whatever golf course he was on when he got the call, rushed his decision to give all that up and said yes when he really didn’t want too. I suppose that’s possible and now is trying to see if the Dolphins just sort of forget about their conversation about him returning to the game.
Differences of Opinion?
Or, and this is a big or, it could be that the Dolphin’s brass and Gailey have differences of opinions on who to draft with the 5th overall pick in the NFL Draft. We know that management has the hot pants for Tua Tagovailoa. It’s quite possible that Gailey doesn’t see Tua fitting with his system or is freaked out about his injury history. Gailey might be a big proprietor of Justin Herbert or someone else.
I’d like to think that this won’t turn into a situation, in a few weeks, where we see that Gailey has decided to stay retired. That would not be ideal for the Dolphins. Many of the coaches out there have saddled up with other teams. Sure, they can go and get someone but this process was supposed to be precise. Searching for an OC after firing one who seemingly did well then looking to sign a retired guy only for that retired guy to walk out on you before anything gets going is not the way you draw it up. Hopefully, Gailey signs very soon and we can focus on free agency, then draft and all this growing uneasiness was all for nothing.
I fully understand that it’s too hard to say why Gailey and the Dolphins aren’t on their second honeymoon right now. But, I think we’re at the point to start pointing out that the Miami Dolphins still have not, officially, signed Chan Gailey as their offensive coordinator.
