The Phoenix Mercury are going for it all with the moves they are trying to make in day two of free agency. Early in the day, Mercury traded DeWanna Bonner to the Connecticut Sun. Phoenix received three first-round picks: No. 7 and 10 picks in the 2020 draft, and first-rounder in 2021.
Chance to get younger
The move will give the Mercury a chance to get young talent to go along with Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi. Phoenix now has three first-round picks and all in the top 10, so not only will they get younger. But they will also bring quality players with the high draft picks. But Phoenix could also swing some of those picks to bring another star player as well.
News broke late Tuesday that Skylar Diggins-Smith will be heading to the Mercury, according to womensbasketball247. Diggins-Smith will get the four-year supermax, the rest of the trade is unknown this time. It doesn’t stop there; either the Mercury is also trying to acquire Tina Charles from the New York Liberty.
Big four
The Phoenix Mercury are not playing around; they are going for it all this season. The Merc is trying to dominate the league with a big four. I love what Phoenix is trying to do; they are leaving no stone unturned, and trying to become like the Golden State Warriors was when they signed Kevin Durant.
If the Mercury manages to pull this off, Charles will play the stretch four next to Griner, Diggins-Smith would be the point guard and take a lot of pressure off Taurasi, who would be able to do more work off the ball. Taurasi has been banged up the last couple of years, so playing off the ball will do her some good.
All four of the girls have played on Team USA, so they have all played together before. Man, if Phoenix can pull this off, they will be the odds on favorite to win it all as of right now. Stay tuned, and let’s see what day three brings us.
Notes: The Mercury has also signed Bria Hartley to go along with Diggins-Smith.
