The Connecticut Sun have officially clinched a playoff spot. I believe they have all the pieces to take the championship this year. Jonquel Jones and Alyssa Thomas are still holding onto that All-Star fire as both of them are averaging points in the double digits (Jones 14.8, Thomas 11.0). If they keep scoring and rebounding they are a powerful frontcourt duo. Jasmine Thomas is a sharp PG and should continue to be the floor general, her performance against the Dallas Wings (16 points and 9 dimes) is what they’ll need from the 8-year veteran. Are the Connecticut Sun real playoff contenders?
Although Courtney Williams’ trademark is speed, I’d love to see her slow it down a hair. Williams brings a lot of energy to the court and she plays a versatile two spot well. Shekinna Stricklen has shown some nice scoring spurts if her and the coaching staff can hone-in on that she’s definitely their X-factor. Bria Holmes has been looking pretty good after the All-star break. Stats show her to average 6.3 points per game.
But after watching her against the Liberty (15 points in 17 minutes). It was clear that she has exactly the type of energy the Sun need coming off the bench.
Connecticut is averaging under 80 points per game, this could hurt them deep in the playoffs against powerhouses like Washington(88.6 PPG) and Las Vegas(82.0 PPG). The Sun starters will need to remain healthy and stay in the game. Prepare themselves to play 30 minutes plus per night. The bench is averaging 4 points per game. But hopefully, the playoffs will bring an unforeseen spark to the reserves and propel the Sun to championship status.
I am excited for the playoffs to begin on September 11. I know all eight teams will bring the fire and the flash. All the reason why Connecticut Sun are real playoff contenders.
