The final batch of preseason games was played this week, and we all know what that means. Next week is the real deal. Week 3 of the preseason holds importance to the usual suspects and sure things of the team for it acts as a simulation of how the games will usually flow. The fourth and final game of the preseason is known as the “Fight for 53.” Draftees and off season signings face off to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. Who shone? Who is in trouble? And who will ultimately make the 53 after the Redskins Preseason Week 4?
Double Dose of Sims
There are currently two ‘Sims’ on the team. Steven Sims Jr, number 15, only had two targets Thursday night and only caught one. Quality over quantity; the one catch made was a big one. A diving catch in the endzone for the only touchdown of the night. Sims jr has electric speed, and although hasn’t played much, shows a high ceiling.
Cam Sims however did not have a good night at all. 7 targets, 1 catch, for 12 yards. He had several gut wrenching drops as well.
It’s no secret that the Redskins need all the help they can get at reciever. As of this moment the receivers are as follows:
• Paul Richardson
• Trey Quin
• Josh Doctson
• Terry McLaurin
• Kelvin Harmon
• Robert Davis
• Cam Sims
• Steven Sims Jr.
• Darvin Kidsy
It is speculated Josh Doctson is on his way out via trade or walk at the end of the season. Robert Davis has made a bit of a name for himself as well during the preseason. Let’s not forget Kidsy who has also began to create a name for himself. Quinn, Richardson, McLaurin, and Harmon are more than likely locked up, with Davis being the fifth reciever. Gruden and staff will have an interesting decision to make at that position.
Not Such a Tight Squeeze
The tight end situation may not be as dire as once thought. Jordan Reed once again is questionable. Vernon Davis has remained strong and serviceable. Surprisingly Jeremy Sprinkle has shown improvement. If all three can stay healthy, the tight (end) situation will not be a problem.
Quarterback Carousel
With Case Keenum named week 1 starter, and Colt McCoy injured, Dwayne Haskins is the backup. Given what the Redskins have been through in the last year, and with the left tackle position still as open as it is, it would not a bad idea to keep three quarterbacks. McCoy should go on the inactive list; he has been injured everytime when called upon. Unfortunately, the likelihood for Jalan McClendon being kept is slim-to-none, although it would be understandable if he was in fact kept.
The Redskins like the rest of the league has until 4 p.m Saturday to get to 53. As stated before, Jay Gruden and company have a lot to figure out, but fear not Redskins fans. There will be one man who we all know will survive the cuts as he always does; Semaje Perine.
