With Super Bowl LVII week on our hands, I decided to look at two players forever linked to the Super Bowl.
Joe Montana and Steve Young share one of the more unique storylines in NFL history. They are undoubtedly two of the greatest NFL teammates ever to do it.
Joe Montana
Joe Montana is the older of the two and responsible for the San Fransisco 49ers’ initial success. He is regarded as one of the greatest to ever play. He is a four-time Super bowl Champion and three-time Super Bowl MVP. I don’t really have to make any case for his greatness.
Steve Young
Steve Young is the one who needs more recognition in comparison to Montana. Young is also an NFL Hall of Famer and Super Bowl MVP. Although his championship rings don’t compete with Montana his play on the field does.
Firstly, I believe Young is one of if not the greatest rushing quarterback in NFL history. His 49-yard game-winning run against the Vikings is in my opinion, the greatest quarterback run ever. It’s arguably the greatest run in general.
When it comes to rushing quarterbacks there is something to be said about being left-handed. Three of the greatest rushing quarterbacks of all time are all left-handed.
Steve Young, Mike Vick, and Tim Tebow Are All Left-Handed
Being a left-handed runner gives you an advantage over your opponent. Because the vast majority of runners are right-handed, the lefty is a change of pace. The way that they run is a shock to the defender. They are used to tackling right-handed players. When the lefty comes along it freezes them for an extra half-second. Which in most cases is all too late.
There are a number of great left-handers in sports. The greatest hockey player of all time is a lefty and the same can possibly be said about basketball. Bill Russell, although left out of the GOAT discussion, is a lefty.
Being a Lefty Has Its Advantages in All Sorts of Sports. I Think It Played a Big Part in Steve Young’s Greatness.
Another reason why Steve Young is so great is that he can throw too. Young currently holds the record for most touchdown passes in a Super Bowl, with six. Young broke Montana’s previous record of five. Young’s record has stood strong since 1995.
It’s hard to believe that record will be broken in this Super Bowl. The Eagles and Chiefs both have strong defenses and rushing attacks. I don’t think either quarterback will have enough time to throw six or seven touchdowns.
Although neither Jalen Hurts nor Patrick Mahomes is left-handed, they are both great at rushing, which should be a big factor in Super Bowl LVII.
