Scouting Notes

  • Fierce competitor and leader.
  • An absolute playmaker with great football IQ.
  • Ran every route in the book.
  • Versatility to line up anywhere, and Boston College fully took advantage of that skill, moving him around all over the field to generate positive matchups.
  • All the makings of a No.1 receiver.
  • Was relied on heavily at BC, and was the clear offensive focal point.

Short Summary

Zay Flowers is one of my favorite receivers in this class. I genuinely searched for a glaring flaw in his game and found none. He is explosive, twitchy, and quick, plays the position to perfection, and was dominant for Boston College. He was the obvious offensive leader for the team, and that tends to indicate some level of NFL success.

Flowers is not only a master of the craft, he even has the perfect mental makeup. He is a vocal leader and a fiery competitor. It’s safe to assume he is also a hard worker, as competitors tend to be.

Unfortunately, he is exceptionally small, making him a severe outlier at the position. In the pros, he’d be tiny, which would severely limit his lineup capabilities. With everyone faster and stronger in the pros, his speed and toughness won’t stand out as much.

I still can’t see myself betting against Zay Flowers, and I’m sure he’ll have a very productive career, but I can’t rank him in the Top 10, which is what I’d do if he was just 2″ taller and a dozen pounds heavier.
