Dan Marino took some time to reminisce about his former coach, Don Shula, recently. While waxing poetic on his time playing for the late Miami Dolphin coach, Marino decided to wear his colors on his vest. He admitted he’s all set with the idea of Bill Belichick catching Shula in the all-time wins category.

I hope he don´t get it. I´m a Dolphin for life. Coach Shula for life. I don´t want him to get it.

Gotta love this. Marino epitomizes loyalty. He’s a competitor. Obviously, he doesn’t want Coach Belichick catching his former coach’s all-time wins record. The guy didn’t become one of the all-time great QBs because he was cool with opposing QBs having better passing statistics than him. You think when he was outplayed in Super Bowl XIX by Joe Montana, after having a record-setting 1984 season, he just shrugged it off? Of course not! The man is simply being honest. He loves his coach and he’s willing to go to battle for him even now. If that means rooting against Darth Hoodie, so be it. This is admirable.

Unfortunately for Marino, he’s battling inevitability. You see, Shula’s win total stands at 328, 347 if one includes the playoffs. Belichick has 280 wins, 311 including playoffs, and counting. My math isn’t great, but I believe that leaves The Hoodie 49 regular-season wins shy of breaking Shula’s record and making Handsome Dan an angry elf. Bill Belichick catching Shula is a foregone conclusion. The numbers add up perfectly. He’s motivated, engaged, and determined to coach for several more seasons. He’s also vindictive and vengeful. The Hood takes pride in destroying those that wrong him and, you see, this includes Don Shula. Belichick has respect for Shula, this is clear. But, like Marino, Belichick is a competitor. He won’t stop coaching until he smashes Shula’s record. Sorry, Dan. Don’t stress though, you and your team have a lot to be excited about!
