Once again, this past weekend we had another UFC event. Going into it Ufc fight night: Dos Anjos vs Lee, I wasn’t looking forward to it. No fights really jumped out at me that this would be one of the better cards. Yes, Dos Anjos and Lee could be entertaining, but that was it. But I was wrong. This was a very fun and entertaining card all night. So here’s a quick recap of what happened, and what’s next for the fighters.
UFC’s Davi Ramos vs Austin Hubbard kicks off the Ufc fight night main card
To start the main card off we had Davi Ramos going up against Austin Hubbard. The first round was close and both fighters were active but I had Ramos taking the first round slightly. The second and third rounds were more convincing. Both fighters showed they didn’t mind standing and banging. I’ll give both fighters chins credit to. There were some good powerful shots both fighters took. When Ramos would take Hubbard down he stayed on him though. By the end of the fight, he had 4+minutes of control time which helped him secure the unanimous decision.
Ufc lightweight Charles Oliveira knocks out Nik Lentz
Up next we had Nik Lentz versus Charles Oliveira. This was the third time fighting each other, and the past two fights were the fight of the night fights. So the crowd knew going into this fight that this could be another exciting fight. But with a 7″ inch reach advantage for Oliveira, he picked Lentz apart. Lentz was game though. He still came forward and landed punches and kicks. Unfortunately, one of those kicks was caught by Oliveira and blasted him right in the face to get the 2nd round knockout. Charles Oliveira didn’t get a performance bonus for it, but I think he definitely should have.
Ufc debut for Derrick Krantz doesn’t go as planned
Next up was one of Dana White contender series fighters, Derrick Krantz, versus Vicente Luque. This was Krantz’s Ufc debut and he came guns a blazing. Soon as the round started he came out swing and swarmed Luque all over the place. He even got Vicente Luque down to the ground and was able to control him 2 of the 5 minutes of the round. Like most fights when you blow your energy early though, you end up getting caught in the end. That’s exactly what happened when Luque got the fight under control and was able to put Krantz away by KO. I’ll give the kid credit. He showed heart.
Former Invicta champs square off
Before the co-main event fight, we had Megan Anderson squaring off with Felica Spencer in the featherweight division bout. Both fighters were coming in as former Invicta champions. So this had the possibility to be another competitive fight. Not so much. It only took Felica Spencer just under 2 minutes to submit Megan Anderson. Anderson just had to answer for Spencers punches and kicks. Once Felica Spencer got her down it was over. Spencer wins via rear naked choke.
Ian Heinisch fights Antonio Carlos Junior to close decision
For the co-main event, we had Antonio Carlos Junior versus Ian Heinisch. This was a very close fight which there was a lot of ground and grappling work. First round I gave to Carlos Junior because he seemed to control Heinisch more. But the 2nd and 3rd round Ian Heinisch stepped it up, mixing some different offensive looks in. The judges scored this one a unanimous decision which I agree with. It was a close fight but a good one. A good way to set up the main event.
UFC’s Kevin Lee heads back to drawing board after submission loss in the Ufc fight night main event.
Finally, the final fight of the night was a welterweight bout between Rafael dos Anjos and Kevin Lee. This was Lee’s first attempt at welterweight, which is more his natural size compared to the 155 pounds division he was formerly in. Lee has some good wrestling and was the slight favorite. That’s because the past couple wrestlers gave Dos Anjos problems. I went with Dos Anjos in this fight though because even if Lee got him down on the ground, Dos Anjos has some good jiu-jitsu. Lee stuck with his bread and butter the whole fight by taking Dos Anjos down 6 of 16 attempts but unfortunately, Dos Anjos finally found an answer to catch Lee and was able to make him tap due to an arm triangle.
Closing thoughts and possible match ups to be made.
So overall going into the fights my expectations were low for an exciting card, but it delivered. It may have opened the door for one or two as well as sent a few other fighters back to the drawing board. I’d like to see Kevin Lee maybe take a step back and fight someone outside of a top 3 guy. Someone like Leon Edwards. Lee may naturally walk around at the 170 mark but its a new division. He needs to learn how to fight with that extra weight on. As far as Rafael Dos Anjos, I’d like to see him face Colby Covington. He’s the only top 5 guy without an opponent. If not him then Stephen Thompson would be entertaining as well. I’d also like to see a step up in competition for Charles Oliveira. A scrap between him and Paul Felder would be interesting to watch for both of them as they both look to move closer to gold.
