I try to stay away from the drama side of sports, but sometimes it boils my blood. I am sure all the Cowboy fans will jump down my throat about this, but it needs to be said. We are in an era where players do not want to play out the contract they signed to get into the league. It is rumored that Ezekiel Elliott wants a new contract or he will hold out 2019. Melvin Gordon’s agent has already come out and said his client will not report to camp unless he has an extension or is traded. I believe that Melvin Gordon should get a new contract and not Zeke.
Melvin Gordon
Melvin Gordon is on his last year, and like Le’veon Bell who held out all of 2018 and signed with the New York Jets this season for 4 years $52 Million, wants to a deal because honestly anything can happen to him in 2019. A serious injury could lower his value drastically. Gordon has had a few injury concerns over the last few years. He may not be worth what Bell and what Zeke would bring in. I don’t mind Gordon trying to get paid now. The way the Chargers have been with contracts over the years you have to take the early jump into a new contract. Ask Joey Bosa how is rookie deal went.
Ezekiel Elliott
Ezekiel Elliot has been a top running back and he does deserve to be paid, I am not going to argue with that. But, he still has 2 years on his contract. When you sign a rookie contract, you honor that contract. I do not see an issue if on the last year you pursue a new deal like Bell did and Gordon is doing. The fact that Zeke is bringing this up in my mind is greedy and self-centered. Zeke is once again being a distraction to the whole Dallas Cowboys organization. Being a leader, you have to lead by example and put the team first. The Cowboys are working on getting other contracts done first, like Dak Prescott.
Elliott has been in trouble with the league before, served a 6-game suspension for grabbing a woman’s breast and this year an altercation with a bouncer while he was drunk, but the NFL chose not to pursue any actions. Elliot should concentrate on reporting with his team, work on being the best at the game, lead his team to a Super Bowl, then next offseason get paid. Jerry will pay him; Zeke doesn’t need to throw threats. I hope he rethinks it, shows up to camp with his teammates and has a fantastic year.
I know a lot of people will not agree with me but it is how I feel. We have watched players honor their rookie contracts and either resign or move on, and just played the contact out. Those days seem to be gone. Nonetheless, this is why Melvin Gordon should get a new contract and not Zeke.
