The Cleveland Cavaliers have three rookies on the roster that could potentially make an impact right away. Point guard Darius Garland was taken with the fifth overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. He only played in five games during his freshman season at Vanderbilt because of a knee injury. His potential upside is Damian Lillard.
Darius Garland can score the basketball with ease and he is also a solid passer. As long as Garland is healthy, he will most likely be starting in his rookie season alongside with Collin Sexton in the backcourt.
Darius Garland averaged 16.2 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 2.6 APG, 0.4 BPG, and 0.8 SPG last season. He is only 19 years old.
Cleveland also selected forward/guard Dylan Windler with the 26th overall pick out of Belmont University. When the Cavaliers took him with that selection, I had no idea who he was at first. But then I saw his stat line college ball and I was like, oh I see why they are taking a chance on this guy.
In 33 games he played last season at Belmont, he averaged 21.3 PPG, 10.8 RPG, 2.5 APG, 0.6 BPG, and 1.4 SPG.
During the NBA Summer League, Dylan Windler looked good and he was draining some 3’s from the deep territory.
Windler will most likely come off the bench during his rookie season and he could be a starter in the future. Dylan Windler needs to work on his defense. He is 22 years old.
Cleveland traded back into the first-round with the Milwaukee Bucks. With the 30th overall pick, the Cleveland Cavaliers selected shooting guard Kevin Porter Jr. from USC. He is only 19 years old and Porter Jr. has a ton of upside.
He played in 21 games last season in college. Kevin Porter Jr. averaged 9.5 PPG, 4 RPG, 1.4 APG, 0.5 BPG, and 0.8 SPG.
He will probably start the year coming off the bench or playing in the NBA G-League. There is no need to rush him.
The Cleveland Cavaliers will most likely miss the playoffs once again in the 2019-2020 season. John Beilein will be the new head coach this season for Cleveland. He has spent the past several years coaching college basketball at the University of Michigan. How good will the Cleveland Cavaliers rookies be?
