WNBA free agency got off to an early start Sunday morning with two signings; Shekinna Stricklen and Danielle Robinson both signed with different teams. The Atlanta Dream signed guard Shekinna Stricklen to a two-year deal. The Las Vegas Aces signed guard Danielle Robinson to a one-year contract.
Shekinna Stricklen Atlanta Dream
Stricklen scored 9.0 points per game last season for the Connecticut Sun. She was on the floor to produce spacing for the Sun. Stricklen shot 38 percent from three-point land. Atlanta struggled with shooting last season; they had the worst 3-point % and shooting % in the WNBA last season. Stricklen will help open up the floor and create more spacing for their ball handlers to go to work.
Stricklen shooting was able to give players like Courtney Williams, Jonquel Jones, and Alyssa Thomas room to work for the Connecticut Sun. Atlanta hopes she can do the same for their team.
Danielle Robinson Las Vegas Aces
The Lady Aces needed to grab a guard with the free-agent guard market getting smaller by the day. So Las Vegas signed point guard Danielle Robinson who played last year with the Minnesota Lynx. Last season Robinson averaged 10.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. Robinson is more of a slashing point guard and an excellent defender, she has made three WNBA All-Defensive teams in her career.
The Aces need to get more shooters, but with the guard market dwindling, they need to sign somebody. Coach Laimbeer is building a team kind of like his Bad Boy Pistons with all the defensive-minded and physical players. Las Vegas was already one of the best defensive teams in the WNBA; now, with adding Robinson and Angel McCoughtry, they will be even stronger on the defensive side of the floor. Now all they need to do is add some more three-point shooters to space the floor, and that could make the Aces the team to beat.
