In a building in Manhattan. A group of New Yorkers looks up at the sky, and they look for an answer to the question. Will I see a point guard this season? Seriously, what in the 6th, 21st, 3rd, and 11th letters of the alphabet are going on with this team at point guard? I don’t even think most Knick fans or NBA fans were living the last time the Knicks had a point guard that made an all-star team at best. You would have to go back to the early 1980s. Michael Ray Richardson was the last great point guard the Knicks had.
In typical Knick fashion, he self-destructed with drugs. He’s cleaned up now, he’s a lot better. Once he got traded from the Knicks he went to rehab and had the best year of his career in 1985. It seems players improve… once they leave the Knicks. Even Nate Robinson… (hey I’m trying to be positive here if you saw the Tyson vs Jones fight you know what I mean) he got more notoriety with Bulls when he filled in for Derrick Rose than he ever did with the Knicks. The ship still be sinkin’. It’s been sinking for almost 50 years.
The Terrible Life of A Knicks Guard
It just seems like it’s always the guards that get the worst of the media. I don’t blame them. There so many below-average guards in the past 20 years. Ranging from Heisman winners to washed-up guards. Stephon Marbury kind of brought on the attention himself, but that’s a story for another time. It’s even more frustrating now because the Knicks DID NOT draft a point guard with their first pick of the night.
Where We Are Now?
If I’m not mistaken. The Knicks have FOUR DRAFT BUSTED POINT GUARDS SIGNED. FOUR. Why? No one knows! this makes no sense. Frank Ntilikina’s offensive game is socially distant, Elfrid Payton cannot shoot the ball in the ocean, Austin Rivers is already on his 5th team at the age of 28, and Dennis Smith has shown nothing but a waste of time.
How does this team even generate an offense? No one wants to sit through another wasted season where the Knicks are one of the lowest three-point shooting teams in the league. WHERE YOU NEED TO SHOOT THREE POINTERS TO WIN BASKETBALL GAMES. The 90’s mentality of “we need to hit everyone and have the offensive ability of a slice of bread” DOES NOT AND WILL NOT EVER WORK. The grit and grind Grizzlies are a perfect example of that. They didn’t hit everyone but they did have an offense and it got them to a conference finals.
A Knicks Christmas Story Conclusion
Sadly, no one will get their wish this year. The draft class of 2021 is filled with top prospects. So hopefully if things go back to normal. The Knicks will get to draft one of the very talented guards next year. They have two first round picks and I honestly don’t know how many second round picks but I know they got some. The best solution for this season is to just throw RJ out there at point guard.
The Knicks try to tank every year. Maybe if they TRY TO WIN maybe they will be rewarded for their effort. There are a lot of games where they do not show enough energy and effort. Sometimes I wonder if they are trying to tank… even though you can’t really do that anymore (it’s the Knicks, they’re always a decade behind the rest of the league.) So to sum it up. The answer is no, the Knicks will not have a savior at point guard this season and they may not even get it right next season. It’s hard being a fan and writing about the Knicks.
