Early on August 27th, the entertainment news outlet TMZ posted on its twitter feed an audiotape of DeMarcus Cousins. The Los Angeles Lakers center was allegedly on tape threatening his ex-girlfriend. The incident was apparently over Cousins seven-year-old son. Cousins wanted his son to attend his upcoming wedding and was being told no. The center is already out for the year as he tore his ACL early in training.
This after having a torn left quadriceps injury, and an Achilles heel tear he recovered from the 2017-18 season. Is it time for DeMarcus Cousin to retire? Is this all too much to come back from? DeMarcus Cousins to retire.
Cousins Latest Fight
When TMZ posted the audio of Cousins allegedly threatening his Ex, many were shocked. The audio is clear and does seem to be Cousins. His Ex, claims in court documents obtained by ESPN, she is seeking a restraining order against Cousins in Alabama. In addition to the threats made on the leaked audio, the woman alleges that Cousins has previously choked her.
This is a major allegation and should be taken seriously by the NBA and the Laker organization.
Accordingly in a statement put out by the NBA yesterday, “We are aware of the report regarding DeMarcus Cousins and are investigating the allegations.” The Laker organization also put out a statement, “We are aware of the allegation involving DeMarcus Cousins and, of course, take this claim seriously…We are in the process of gathering information and will reserve further comment at this time.”
Should DeMarcus Cousins Retire
There have been many players in the NBA that ended their careers with an injury. From ACL’s to ankle injuries or others. A hand full have come back to play after a big injury. One that comes to mind is Kobe Bryant. He came back after his Achilles injury but many believe he was never the same. There have also been many that came back from outside the game problems. Again Kobe comes to mind. But I do not know if there has been anyone that has come back from three serious injuries and a major outside scandal.
If the NBA finds enough evidence to cause some sort of penalty, say games suspension, is that worth it for the Lakers? Cousins was by far one of the best players in the NBA and top three at his position each season. But an ACL, a torn left quadriceps and an Achilles, that alone would scare most teams away. But now add in an off the court Domestic case involving shooting someone. All Allegedly of course. As a result, you now have enough against a player to not be worth the fight.
The fact is he was lucky to get the shot from the Lakers and after the latest drama who knows. This is the NBA and teams that are really bad will always need a guy like Cousins once was. So a shot to see if he can be that guy is worth it for them. But is that how he wants to finish his career? He has made enough money and can always do something else, say on television. Maybe he just needs some time. All that being said, is it time for DeMarcus Cousin to retire?
