Sixth Man of the Year – NBA Mid Season Awards

Errol – Montrezl Harrell/Lou Williams

Is it possible that the NBA allows a Co-Sixth man? We’ve seen it once with Rookie of The Year but now there is an argument in this category.

Montrezl Harrell has had an incredible impact this season. He’s averaging 19.3 points per game and 7.1 rebounds per game. He’s shooting a highly efficient 57 percent from the field which places him 11th in the league as one of four non-centers in the top 12. He’s second in qualified players for the sixth man in off the bench scoring with his average and fifth in rebounding.

On the other hand, Clipper teammate Lou Williams is chasing his already record-setting fourth 6th man award. His numbers are highly similar to Harrell with an impressive 20 PPG and 6.1 APG.

The NBA may never do it but it certainly isn’t much separation between the two leading candidates.

Paul – Terrence Ross

Is Terence Ross a dark horse for Sixth Man at the NBA mid season point?

I’m going off the path just a bit. I know Lou Williams is good and there are several others that can stake a claim to Sixth Man, but Terrence Ross of the Orlando Magic is a true sixth man. Ross is one of those Vinnie Johnson types of guys, they come in the hot and score in a hurry. He has a smooth game that allows him to get to the rim and still shoot a nice jumper as well.

While averaging almost 14 points a game this year he gives the Magic much-needed scoring when the starters are not in the game. He gets starter minutes most games and could start for many teams in the league. The hustle on defense and the strong scoring that sparks that Magic bench is why he would be my pick for NBA midseason sixth man.

Dennis Schroder is having a heck of a season off the bench for the Oklahoma City Thunder. He is averaging 18.3 points per game on 46 percent shooting from the field. Also, Schroder is shooting 36 percent from three-point land. Schroder is grabbing 3.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.

When the Thunder goes to their three-guard line up with Paul, Gilgeous-Alexander, and Schroder, they are a dangerous team. Schroder is averaging 30 minutes a night for the Thunder and is a big reason why the Thunder are surprising people this season.

When looking for a Sixth Man candidate you look for guards that can score the rock. In fact, the last non-guard to win the Sixth Man Award was during the 2010-2011 season when the Candy Man Lamar Odom won it with the Lakers. Lou Williams, a 2 guard on the LA Clippers, has been the king of the bench the past two years and the 2020 season is no different.

Lou-Will has been the unquestioned leader of the 2nd unit for 30-13 Clippers, scoring 20 points while tacking on 6 assists and 3 boards per game as well. Dennis Schroder has put up 18 points off the bench for the OKC Thunder and poses one of the biggest threats to the defending award winner. That being said, I fully expect Williams to continue his stellar play and for the Clippers to continue winning games. Sweet Lou will get his third in a row.
