When we started our Wrestling podcast, Queens’ Takeover, each host explained how they became the wrestling fan that they are today. Well, my journey goes back to 2005 and involved an animal of a superstar! Here’s how family and Batista got me hooked on wrestling!
In the summer of 2005, my nephew came to stay with me for the weekend. One day, he took a VHS tape out of his bag and asked, “Aunt Kat, can I watch this?” I asked what it was and he said it was a wrestling tape.
It turned out to be Vengeance from just a few weeks earlier.
As we’re sitting there watching the event, I’m thinking in the back of my mind, “WTH?” It was crazy and cool at the same time!
Time for the Main Event!
At that time, I could relate to Batista’s character and the storyline between him and Triple H. You could immediately sense the bad blood between them. No better way to settle a rivalry than in a structure called Hell in a Cell! Because I hadn’t seen any WWE events before, I didn’t know what to expect!
#BRUTAL
After that event, I sat there shocked by what I saw. It was also a positive way for the show to end with the champion on top!
Caught My Eye
During the following week, I was flipping channels when I ran past RAW. Because of what I saw on Vengeance, it caught my eye. I later caught Batista on SmackDown onto his next rivalry. He pulled me in and that was all she wrote!
I officially became a wrestling fan!
Watching WWE gave my nephew and me something to talk about and relate to. Plus, watching every week gave me a chance to follow Batista and learn more. No matter how much his character changed over time, he’s always been my favorite! I won’t even begin to tell you how much I screamed when he came back for the last time in 2019!
My nephew opened the door to wrestling and Batista pulled me in! I could not be more grateful to them both!
