While most of us are anxiously anticipating the day the WNBA season begins, let us take a Pre-Season Peek into each team across the league.
Let’s look into how the Dallas Wings are planning to play this upcoming season. This off-season has been a great start for the Dallas Wings. During the WNBA Draft on April 17th, they selected three first-round picks. The picks selected included Satou Sabally (2nd), Bella Alarie (5th), and Tyasha Harris (7th). This team is coming in strong with three very talented rookies on top of a very talented team.
Pre-Season Peek: Guard Play
A Pre-Season Peek for the Dallas Wings is heavily relying on guard play. This team has a very talented, guard-based roster with many rookies. The most experienced guard on the roster has only been in the league for three years. The two guards drafted were Bella Alarie, a guard/forward from Princeton University, and Tyasha Harris, a guard from the University of South Carolina. These two players are very talented and will bring so much energy and skill to the Wings. In addition to these two players, returning will be Arike Ogunbowale, Allisha Gray, and Katie Lou Samuelson, who was acquired through a trade.
Ogunbowale was an outstanding rookie for the Dallas Wings during the 2019 season. She was a contender for Rookie of the Year and made the All-Rookie team. Arike who led the team in both points and assists during the 2019 season, was heavily relied on offensively. With the addition of Katie, Bella, and Tyasha, the Wings will continue to look to the guards for scoring. While Skylar Diggins-Smith was sitting out last season due to maternity leave, the team struggled without a leader. Now Skylar will be joining the Phoenix Mercury. However, this upcoming season many new and returning guard players will be able to step up as a leaders both on and off the court.
Pre-Season Peek: Post Play
The Pre-Season Peek for the Dallas Wings includes versatile post players. The roster has both depth and height down low. Before the 2019 season, the Wings lost Liz Cambage in a trade with the Las Vegas Aces. Cambage brought both height and scoring to the Wings. Without her during the 2019 season, the Dallas Wings struggled to score and rebound in the paint. Now drafted is rookie Satou Sabally, a 6’4″ power forward from the University of Oregon. Sabally will be joining post players such as Thorton, Gustafson, Harrison, and Ndour. She will bring height and skill to the team that is desired for this league’s gameplay.
The post players on the roster are very versatile and excellent shooters. Players such as Sabally and Thorton have the ability to shoot beyond the paint and the three-point line, which will make it difficult for defenders to guard. Versatility is a huge aspect of this Dallas Wings team with both guards and forwards. Harrison was the teams leading rebounder last season at only 6’3″, Sabally will add some height and rebounding ability to the team. This team will play very guard-heavy, but having these post players will help them score more often and be a contender in the WNBA.
Improvement
The Dallas Wings will definitely have an improvement in both their team and their record at the end of this season. Their record was only 10-34 last season which did not qualify them for the playoffs. This team has already improved and this season of gameplay has not even begun yet. Utilizing their three first-round draft picks will help them improve their team and will definitely benefit them. The Wings will be a talented contender in this upcoming season, a very young team, but filled with talent.
