All right so it’s the best time of the year again for the football fanatics: the preseason. This means Thursday night football, in your favorite team’s chair, anxious to see how they’re gonna play. However, there are many talented athletes who, even though they did not play in the NFL, may have excelled on the field given the chance. As a strict basketball girl, football reminds me of the NBA players whose athletic abilities I would’ve never got to witness had they chosen to play in the NFL instead of the NBA. So, here’s a list of five NBA star players who could’ve played in the NFL.
1. Matt Barnes
NBA Championship winner and former basketball star, Barnes is actually a man of many athletic talents including football. In high school, Barnes excelled on both his school’s basketball and football team. After being drafted in 2002, he considered playing pro football in 2006. He even had his agent put out feelers to NFL teams for a tryout. Luckily he was snatched up by the Golden State Warriors or I would’ve never got to witness this cutie’s talent.
2. LeBron James
One of the most influential and talented players in NBA history, it should be no surprise that James’ athletic abilities don’t stop at basketball. In high school, he played on his school’s team as a wide receiver. However, he quit after his junior year to focus on basketball which is an absolutely blessing. This is also probably a good thing considering at his current height (6’8″) and weight (250lbs), he’s probably too bulky to be a wide receiver. Though, he would make an excellent tight-end.
3. Rajon Rondo
Before being drafted by the Pheonix Suns in 2006, this four-time NBA All-Star had ambitions of being a football player. However, because of worries from his mother he took the basketball route instead. Still, Rondo is adamant that he could’ve been an NFL quarterback. In the past, he’s talked about his belief that he would’ve been able to break out in the NFL. Well, I guess we can just consider ourselves lucky that he chose basketball instead.
4. Ben Wallace
Considered by many to be the greatest undrafted player in NBA history, this former center was another icon who played football in high school. Even without knowing this, one look at Wallace, and it’s obvious he would’ve excelled in the NFL. Despite being a talented player, he turned down a scholarship to play football at Auburn. Instead, he played basketball at community college, which worked out in the long run!
5. Nate Robinson
Before this 5’9″ point guard was a threat on the court, he was a star football player in high school and even went on to play football at the University of Washington (UW). Of course, Robinson also played basketball at UW, being drafted in 2005. However, he reportedly tried out for the Seahawks in 2016, something he hinted at since 2011. Even though nothing came out of it then, there’s still may be a chance to see this NBA veteran on the field.
While these NBA star players have other talents, I’m glad they chose to show off on the court instead of the field. If you liked this article don’t be afraid to check out Belly Up Sports on Twitter for more NBA and NFL news and content.
