PFL News: NYC
The name Savannah Marshall means something in the world of the “sweet science”. But now the undisputed middleweight champion is stepping into the smart cage. Tuesday morning the PFL signs another boxer to help grow its PFLW.
CEO PETER MURRAY said:
“it’s an exciting time for PFL as we officially launch PFLW, and the addition of Savannah Marshall strengthens the best global of women in combat sports. It will put the focus on women in combat sports while continuing the PFL’s fighter first merit based approach to MMA. PFLW is committed to the empowerment and equality of all female athletes and provides a dedicated platform for women to become PFL champions”.
The 32-year old was originally signed by Floyd Mayweather Jr. then moved to Hennessey-Sport before landing with Eddie Hearn. Recently she joined up with BEN SHALOM. Although she continues to train with PETER FURY. After tasting defeat for the first time against Claressa Shields (they also fought as amatuers with Marshall getting the “W”), she contemplated retirement. Finding the love again Marshall went up and snagged the super middleweight straps away from Franchon Crews Dezurn in an almost one-sided affair.
The leadup was chippy and got more heated closer to fight night. Dezurn realized fighting at range wasn’t working, adjusted to phonebooth fight which didn’t accomplish anything significant either. Marshall peppered her with jabs and stung her with rights in the majority decision win.
PFL Signs Another Boxer To Cage Fight
Marshall is no fool. She knows, or at least has to know that picking up all the skills to be successful in MMA takes time. How much time left in her clock, only she knows. Salivating for another scrap with Shields might be an underlying reason for the signing. She joins Amanda Serrano, and Shields as boxers coming over. With fighters like Kayla Harrison and Larissa Pacheco waiting in the wings.
Marshall said:
“I am thrilled to begin my journey in MMA with the Professional Fighters League. I am proud to join the most talented female combat sports athletes in the world and continue to raise the profileof womens sports through the PFLW”.
How this affects her boxing career has not yet been discussed publicly. However, she doesn’t look like she’s going to be done anytime soon. Now only getting all the women to the same weight class might be the only remaining roadblock.
