As if we’re living in a Zombieland reality, I’m finding it paramount to abide by rule 32; enjoy the little things. The joy didn’t come to me in the form of a Twinkie. Mine came in the form of an SNL commercial parody that I’ve been looking for years. Actually, it’s been a few years since the last time I searched for it. I remember seeing it as a younger man and thinking this is one of the funniest things I ever saw. I understand that’s some lofty praise. But I really do think this parody of a car commercial from back in 1994 is right up there. It doesn’t get the publicity of many others that SNL has produced, but it should.
So many things stick out to why this, seemingly, run of the mill SNL commercial has me rolling. They say there are two teams working on this new car design and then, out of nowhere there are six teams working on it. The Lenox Paradox will either cost around $4 Million dollars or $175 total dollars. One team wants the Paradox to have multiple airbags while the other team wants the Paradox to shatter on impact throwing people 300 yards.
My favorite part is when I think it’s Morwenna Banks proposes that the Paradox not to include any brakes. The way she says, “No brakes” and moves her hands to signify zero, brings much joy to me.
I know a lot of people, including myself at times, get on current SNL for creating too many political sketches and for simply not having that strong of a cast. But, their commercial parodies, typically, land and I’m all for going in on a deep dive because what else am I really going to do for the next few hours? I suppose I should consult Tarik Cohen.
We all know there are many other SNL commercials that are classics. Commercials will always be awesome to watch and talk about with friends. Commercials such as Sam Waterston’s Old Glory Robot Insurance, Bad Idea Jeans, Schmitts Gay, Shirt in a Can, and of course Oops I Crapped my Pants. But Lenox Paradox, which sounds like it may have been narrated by Donal Sutherland, will always be the mid-2000 Phoenix Suns when it comes to all-time underrated SNL commercials.
Enjoy your quarantining and maybe give some old SNL some run as you try and not lose your minds. Remember…
