Asia Durr of the New York Liberty announced via her social media platforms that she will miss this upcoming season. Durr tested positive for COVID-19 on June 8th, 2020, and states:

“My battle with it [COVID-19] has been complicated and arduous… So much of this virus is unknown and my heart is heavythe decision that I know is best for my long term wellness”. She was drafted last year from the University of Louisville to the New York Liberty, 2nd overall.

College Career

During Durr’s time at the University of Louisville, she had a quite successful career. She had 374 made three-point shots during her time at Louisville. This was record-breaking, putting her first in the ACC and second in the University of Louisville history. During her senior year from 2018-2019, her 2,485 points put her second at the University of Louisville and fifth in ACC history. She also received the Dawn Staley and Ann Meyers Drysdale Award. Durr was also the ACC POY in both 2018 and 2019. She also helped lead Louisville to a Final Four in 2018.

2019 Season

Asia Durr, a guard, played 18 games this past season before suffering an injury. Starting 15 out of the 18 games, she averaged 26.7 MPG and 9.7 PPG. Durr also averaged 1.6 RPG and 1.7 APG. She is a sharpshooter, with an average forty-six percent FG shooting. Her career-high game was 20 points against the Minnesota Lynx. One game against the Seattle Storm she had 4 rebounds and went 3 for 3 on the three-point line. She also scored 19 points against the Chicago Sky. Sadly, Durr ended up missing almost half the season due to a hip injury and underwent surgery.

Future of NY Liberty

The NY Liberty had the 1st overall draft pick in this year’s draft. They selected Sabrina Ionescu from the University of Oregon. Now with Durr opting out, the Liberty has a roster of eleven players. Out of the eleven players, seven are rookies. Even if these players are veterans, most are new additions to the Liberty.

Last season the Liberty had a record of 10-24, the second-worst in the Eastern Conference. This upcoming season has the potential to be a drastic improvement for the Liberty. With the addition of these new players, Liberty will need to work on finding the player’s roles. Positioning on the court will also need to be worked on as this team is very guard-heavy. With talent returning such as players like Kia Nurse, the Liberty should be set with leadership positions.

Sending Good Wishes to Durr

As Durr decides to sit out, I can’t help but feel for her. She missed a large majority of this past season due to injury. Now, she decided to opt-out of the season due to high concern for her health. She opted out at the deadline as a high-risk player. We are sending good wishes and good health to Asia as she goes through this recovery process.
