Modern Ovi
It’s not a surprise that Alex Ovechkin is one of the NHL’s greatest modern day goal scorers. He has over 600 goals in just over 1000 games in the NHL. He is a 7x Rocket Richard Trophy winner, a 3x Hart Trophy winner, an Art Ross Trophy Winner, a Conn Smythe Trophy winner, and now a Stanley Cup Champion. Ovi is without a doubt one of the greatest NHL goal scorers, but he IS the greatest goal scorer EVER.
This season, he has played 11 games so far in the 2018-2019 season, he has 10 goals in that span, adding onto his season total last night against the Canadiens. He is on an absolutely torrid pace in the goal scoring category, and if you know anything about Ovi, he’s not going to slow down any time soon.
All Time Ovi
So why the greatest goal scorer you ask? In the 13 seasons Ovechkin has played, he as played 1003 games (including the shortened season in 2012-2013) and scored 668 goals, including the postseason. In the 13 seasons Wayne Gretzky played, he had 749 regular season goals, including his early NHL career 92, 71, and 87 goal seasons. Not to mention as Gretzky’s career went on, he had a significant drop-off. Ovechkin is Russian Machine, he does not drop-off. Remember when he had a drop-off? Yeah, the next season he scored over 50 goals, and then his next “drop-off” he scored 49 goals.
Timeless Ovi
Ovechkin is currently 17th on the all-time scoring list, and is only 33 years old. He is like fine wine and never ages. It seems that the older he gets, the better he gets. He has become more physical, more scrappy, and still has a rocket slapshot. He’s like Mariano Rivera, he gets older and still seems to be untouchable to his opponents.
You know where Ovi’s spot is, yet you still can’t stop him. Dominance. If he keeps up this pace he’s on, he WILL catch up to Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record and will cement himself as one of the all-time greatest goal-scorers in the history of the NHL. And he has time, he just turned 33, and he seems like he could go on for 10 more years. Gretzky retired before he was 40. Don’t count Ovi out, he will cement himself as a top 5 NHL goal scorer, ever.
