On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Kyrie Irving was supposed to make his first return to Boston. He was out with a supposed shoulder injury, a surprise to absolutely no one. Everyone should have known before the season even started that Kyrie was not going to play in this game. But, Kyrie Irving’s Instagram Story after not playing in this game should make his gutlessness extremely apparent.

Kyrie spent two seasons with the Celtics, but the one that people will remember is the 2018-19 season. The team was diseased from the start of the season, in clear need of leadership. All season long, Kyrie would insist on leading the team while constantly displaying terrible leadership qualities. To make matters worse, he also said he planned on re-signing with Boston at the beginning of the season. By the end of the season, he showed complete disinterest in being apart of the Celtics franchise. Now, it was clear by the end of the season that the Celtics didn’t want him back either–he just wasn’t a good fit in Boston at all–but the city will still remember his false promises.

Kyrie Missed The Game Against the Celtics on Purpose

It should be obvious that Kyrie never intended to play in this game. I’m not saying that Kyrie’s injury was 100% fake, but I am saying that he could have played if he wanted to. He most likely sustained a minor shoulder injury a few games before this road trip and decided to just add a few extra games off.

Look at it this way. In his two seasons with the Celtics, the only time Kyrie even traveled with the team to Cleveland, another former home of his, was for the opening game of the 2017-18 season. That’s a season opener, so he played even if he didn’t want to. It’s also possible that the treatment he got back in Cleveland is the reason he now avoids homecomings. Either way, Kyrie hasn’t been to Cleveland since.

The Brooklyn Nets’ trip to Boston ended a three-game road trip for them. The other two games were against the Cavaliers, a team he requested a trade out of, and the Knicks, a franchise that was once convinced Kyrie would be signing with them. The combination of these three locations was, without a doubt, a dreaded road trip for Kyrie. If he didn’t have this shoulder injury to milk he probably would’ve played in Cleveland and New York and just taken a load management day or something against the Celtics. But an excuse to not even travel with the team to Cleveland or Boston? He had to take it.

Irving’s Instagram Story

Kyrie Irving’s Instagram story is everything you need to know about his character.

First of all, the fact that he didn’t even travel to Boston and the city still got in his head is insane, and it’s honestly more of a knock on Kyrie than it is a complement to Boston. He had to have known ahead of time that they’d boo and chant things about him. The chants weren’t even as creative or witty as I had hoped for. We got a lot of “Kyrie sucks,” and a little bit of “Where is Kyrie?” but man that crowd missed out on some fantastic material. I hoped we’d get at least one “F— Thanksgiving,” chant, in reference to Kyrie’s response last season when a report wished him a happy Thanksgiving. We didn’t even get a “We don’t need you,” or a “Kemba’s better.” And yet, the city of Boston still resides in Kyrie Irving’s head after the 27th of November.

Second, and more importantly, this message makes absolutely no sense. Zero. It’s total word vomit. It kind of brings me back to the days when I was a Celtics fan had to constantly frame these cryptic quotes in a comforting way so that I could sleep at night.

It seems like he’s trying to make a point about how NBA players’ lives are trivialized by fans. I mean, he’s kind of right in a way. We, as fans, have a tendency to act like the players don’t have real lives and that they just play for our entertainment purposes. The problem with his argument is that IT DOESN’T MATTER. It doesn’t matter that fans trivialize your life. Kyrie, as an athlete whose fans don’t take his real-life seriously, makes more money in a year than I will in my entire career in chemistry after nine years of higher education and a Ph.D. thesis.

If it’s not worth putting up with the fans, Kyrie is more than welcome to find a different career. No one’s forcing him to be a basketball player (I would honestly prefer if he weren’t). Kyrie doesn’t need to feel this need that he clearly feels to make NBA basketball into something bigger than just the game of basketball.

Kyrie Irving’s Instagram story is nothing but another attempt by Kyrie to prove that his basketball career is something bigger than the NBA. It is thin-skinned, gutless and egotistical. Just like Kyrie.
